🔍 A recent report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime explores the concerning issue of medical product trafficking in the Sahel region. 🌍 This area, including Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger, faces a high prevalence of infectious diseases. However, challenges in healthcare availability, affordability, and access create a gap that illicit trade is quick to fill. 📊 From 2017 to 2021, over 605 tons of various medical products were seized in West Africa, highlighting the scale of the problem. 🦠 The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation, with a surge in trafficking of unauthorized antivirals and chloroquine. 🤝 The report calls for stronger cross-border cooperation, improved data collection, and safeguarding the legal supply chain from falsified medical products. 📚 This is a complex issue that requires our attention. Let's work together to ensure safe and accessible healthcare for all. #HealthcareAccess #GlobalHealth #SpectralEngines https://lnkd.in/dMi4Ssrn

The children who died from acute kidney failure in the Gambia after talking cough syrup contaminated with ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol could have belonged to any one of us. Substandard medical products are not only a concern for under-served communities. They are a concern for every single person on the African continent. The fact is that anyone who takes medicines on the African continent should be concerned about the state of medicines quality on the African continent. It is not only a concern for small countries - it is a cross boarder challenge affecting every ingle country on the continent. Listen to Colin Shamhuyarira discuss the issues in his podcast coming out 1 December 2023. Medicines for Africa | mfa thanks Colin Shamhuyarira, a veteran of the medicines regulatory industry came onto Utano Podcast this morning and he explained why the quality of medicines is being sacrificed on the African continent. An absolute embarrassment- and a prime example of the transparency and accountability challenges with USAID’s significant focus on for-profit contracts. This is a ridiculously large example, but certainly NOT an exception to the rule. Contracting mechanisms that focus on deliverables linked to profit + disproportionate power in the hands of (sometimes barely competent) mid-level USAID bureaucrats = significant disincentives to effective adaptive management and optimal performance. Yet contractors like Chemonics will continue to rake in the dough hand-over-fist, while I’d be willing to bet most of the USAID paper-pushers who share responsibility for this gross mis-management and corruption remain in their jobs to this day. Shameful. This needs to change. Enough is enough!
Ten years ago, USAID unveiled the largest contract in its history, aimed at transforming health supply chains in lower-income countries. However, it has not gone according to plan. Michael Igoe investigated for over a year what went wrong. #USAID #investigation #health #supplychain #globaldev
