In the new Future Community I talk about retention. Why? Why care about keeping people around?
💵 +💸 Obvious reason one: money money money. Kinda boring but very true.
Acquiring supporters and recruiting donors takes time and money. It's going to take more of both as advertising and social platforms change how they work.
We can't afford to lose people.
🙂 + 💪 Less obvious reason two: retention builds stronger and more sustainable communities. We get more done together. We get to learn more about people and communicate better. Maybe we even have more fun. Oh my.
You can't build community when people come and go. People don't get a sense of belonging. You're constantly questioning the data. It's harder to budget and plan. You may become dependent on the loudest voices (or deepest pockets).
Dig in to see examples from Chicago Sun-Times, Denverite, The City and others. Get some ideas about starting retention and engagement before people even join. And let's talk about why thinking about retention as something for long-time inactive folks is just never going to work.
