The Greek islands have been a firm favourite with Brits for decades thanks to their gorgeous beaches, bustling resorts and must-visit eateries.
However there's one island that rivals the likes of Mykonos and Santorini with its incredible landscape, luxury resorts and mouthwatering food, but it's often overlooked by holidaymakers in favour.
Alonissos may not be a hidden gem - plenty of holiday firms including TUI, Jet2 and Sunvil offer packages to the island - but it's not nearly as famous as the likes of Rhodes and Crete, so you won't face the same hordes of tourists. This island isn't one for those chasing all-night raves or packed clubs; its nightlife is more centred around cosy bars and brilliant restaurants where you could easily spend hours sampling some of that world-famous Greek cuisine.
That's not to say there's nothing to see and do on the island. The gorgeous lush green scenery is ideal for those who want to take on some of the hiking trails, and you'll find plenty of museums and historic sites tucked away in the landscape, while the Old Town has cobbled streets lined with tavernas and shops that will leave you feeling like you've stepped onto the set of Mamma Mia!
However one of the major draws of Alonissos has to be the beaches. According to TUI: "Some of the cleanest waters in the Aegean lap against Alonissos’ coastline, so going for a paddle should be a top priority. Snorkel fans should head for Steni Vala Beach, Glyfa Beach or Votsi Beach – all come with crystal-clear shallows, and shoals of tiny fish dart below."
One of the most popular spots is the pebbled Agios Dimitrios Beach, which never fails to impress visitors. One happy holidaymaker wrote on Tripadvisor: "This large beach, famed on many adverts and social media platforms lives up to the great expectations. The setting is wonderful seemingly surrounded by the typography of Alonissos and its neighbouring Island Peristera. There are even ducks using the water like it's their own pond!
"The water is crystal clear and easily accessible from the small uniformed size small pebbles that form the beach. Enough free parking and two good eating choices with facilities on site. Sun beds and parasol €8. Great value and world class for sure. There is an inflatable section for children."
Another added: "Fabulous beach - spent the entire day on the beach - crystal clear waters and quietness- bliss! No crowds or music to annoy! Tavern on the beach staffed by a friendly lady - great food on offer. A must visit on Alonissos!"
For those who prefer sandier shores, then a trip to Chrisi Milia Beach should be on the cards with its powder golden sands, which one visitor said was the "nicest beach I've ever been to". There's also a small taverna for those who need some snacks and drinks to replenish throughout the day, although it's worth noting that hotels can reserve parts of the beach for their guests so it can get busy during the peak summer seasons.
