Portrait of Kai Schultz

Kai Schultz

Kai Schultz is a reporter in the South Asia bureau of The New York Times, based in New Delhi. He has reported from five countries in the region, covering everything from the murder of a troubadour in Rajasthan to counter-terrorism in the Maldives. He also wrote about India’s push to decriminalize gay sex under a colonial-era law called Section 377.

Before moving to India in 2016, Mr. Schultz lived in Kathmandu, Nepal, for one year, where he reported on Mount Everest, the investigation of crimes from the country’s Maoist civil war and the harvesting of a libido-boosting fungus in the Himalayas. Apart from The Times, he has also written for Foreign Policy and The Times of London.

In 2014, Mr. Schultz graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University with an English degree. He grew up in Gilbert, Ariz., a farming town that quickly became a sprawling suburban metropolis.
