Shashank Bengali

Shashank Bengali is a senior editor at The New York Times and leads the live news team in London. He joined The Times in 2021 after nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent, Washington correspondent and editor at The Los Angeles Times and McClatchy Newspapers.

He was the South Asia bureau chief for The Los Angeles Times from 2014-2018, based in Mumbai, India, and opened that paper’s Singapore bureau in 2019. He has reported from more than 60 countries across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, including numerous stints covering the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 2016, Mr. Bengali shared in a Pulitzer Prize for The Los Angeles Times's coverage of the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, Calif. He is also the recipient of a Sigma Delta Chi award for foreign correspondence, a South Asian Journalists Association award for enterprise reporting and a National Headliner Award. He began his career at The Kansas City Star and has also written for Playboy and Monocle magazines.

Raised in the Los Angeles area, Mr. Bengali studied at the University of Southern California and at Harvard University, where he earned a master’s degree in public policy.
