Dave C It's formulaic, and not very clever in its typecasting females in roles that pretty much match those of characters in Day 3. Seems a little lazily written and formed Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/18/23 Full Review Brett R A risky time slot jump from Fox pays off brilliantly with a great 24 episode stretch that takes the franchise to the next level. Somehow. I'm still stunned this season works so well, since the writers were probably exhausted by this point and IMO the story struggles for 7 hours in the 2nd act, but it recovers for another killer 3rd act that delivers everything the audience wanted and more. The shattering Season 4 finale still gives me goosebumps nearly two decades later. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/18/23 Full Review Brian A One of the best seasons of all time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/23 Full Review Audience Member In its fourth season, 24 tries to be a soft reboot with only three returning cast members and CTU being given a makeover. It didn't work, so they bring back characters from past seasons whilst the ostensible series regulars end up leaving under different circumstances, with only two non-Jack Bauer ones sticking around till the end. There's also the issue of the plot going all over the place with an absurdly over-prepared villain who keeps escaping to the point that those moments might as well be scenes from a Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoon and a subplot with an annoying whiny kid that doesn't even get a proper resolution. Oh, and torture starts becoming a thing that would define the show's identity. Regardless, while the fourth season has more glaring flaws compared to its preceding three seasons, it still makes up for it with great performances, good action sequences, Jack Bauer remaining as badass as ever, some really effective scenes from both tearjerker and nightmare fuel standpoints and introducing new characters that will go on to become fan favourites. 24's attempts to start a clean slate after effectively resolving all the overarching plot threads last season didn't quite work out as well as hoped but Jack Bauer's fourth Day isn't a major television letdown either. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a very good season. I will say that there are some episodes towards the end that made it obvious the writers were stalling a bit, but nothing too frustrating. I really, really liked the ending to this season. One of the best seasons yet. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review steve d The story is still riveting even if some of the characters from season past are given far less to do. Joshua Alston AV Club Season four also features the best villain ever to face off against Jack. Nov 28, 2018 Full Review Brian Lowry Variety At its best, "24" remains brainy and brawny, focusing on just how bad the ostensible good guys need to become to thwart incomprehensible evil. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Hal Boedeker Orlando Sentinel You needn't have seen 24 to step into season four. It starts in such rousing fashion that Sutherland and his colleagues could surpass themselves. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review David Hogan hoganreviews.co.uk The key villains are really dull Middle Eastern terrorist clichés but the season wasn’t without its highlights, and it does set the stage for the straight-up best season of the show so it’s still a fun watch. Rated: 4/5 May 9, 2023 Full Review Peter Schorn IGN Movies Keeping the characters and situations culturally and historically revelant, as was not done in other recent hot-button projects like The Interpreter, elevates the show's dramatic impact, and creates a palpable foe for Bauer to battle against. Rated: 9/10 Nov 28, 2018 Full Review Terry Kelleher People Magazine Jack doesn't hesitate to step far outside the law to accomplish his mission, and the writers will stop at nothing to keep the audience hooked. For 24 fans, the ends justify the means. Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews
