Aberdeen next manager latest as major contender expected to stay in his current post

The race for the manager job is set to take another huge twist

ABERDEEN’S search for a new manager is set to move in a different direction.

Dons chiefs are continuing their search for Neil Warnock’s replacement — but the chances of Swede Jimmy Thelin moving to Pittodrie are fading.

The Elfsborg boss was under consideration after being flagged up by the club’s German advisors, but sources in Sweden expect the 46-year-old to stay on.

Neil Lennon and Mark Fotheringham have both expressed interest in the Aberdeen job while Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has also been linked.

But Thelin now looks to be off the shortlist with chairman Dave Cormack eager to find a new gaffer before the relegation six-pointer against Ross County a week on Saturday.

Thelin held talks with Dibs chiefs when they were looking for a new manager 12 months ago.

He impressed in behind the scenes discussions during that interview process but lost out to Barry Robson.

The Elfsborg boss was recently linked with the Sunderland job before ex-Rangers boss Michael Beale took over.

He has been heavily linked with move away from Sweden but it's believed he will be staying put at Elfsborg for the time being.

Thelin is currently gearing up for the start of the new season which kicks off next month.

Aberdeen are languishing in ninth place in the Premiership just two points ahead of St Johnstone.

Saturday's 1-0 win over Motherwell propelled them out tenth and further away from the relegation drop, with three points separating them and Ross County.
