The US Senate has dismissed impeachment charges against Alejandro Mayorkas, ending a Republican attempt to remove President Biden’s border chief from office.
Democrats, who hold a majority in the Senate, voted against the two impeachment articles on the grounds they “fail to meet the high standard of high crimes and misdemeanours” and could set a dangerous precedent.
In February Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, became the first cabinet secretary in almost 150 years to be impeached by the House of Representatives. Republicans, who control the House, accused him of “wilfully and systemically” refusing to enforce immigration laws and thereby allowing dangerous criminals into the country.
