It was a dream sparked by his father in his homeland of Wales. A dream that would take Louis Rees-Zammit, 23, a former professional rugby player with 31 caps for the Welsh national team, to Florida, and the glittering heights of America’s National Football League (NFL).

Rees-Zammit has done what many have never attempted and swapped rugby for American football via the NFL’s International Player Pathway — and two months later he is set to take the first step with the Kansas City Chiefs, this year’s Super Bowl winners, starting a process that he hopes will end with a place on the team’s active playing roster.

While the move was surprising for many, the seed was planted decades ago by his father, Joe, who played
