England’s Euros squad: Jack Grealish and Conor Gallagher may miss out

From quality and quantity in midfield to defensive problems with form and fitness — sleepless nights face England manager Gareth Southgate as games run out before the big event in Germany

Gareth Southgate’s plans for Euro 2024 will be shaped by a Uefa workshop in Düsseldorf on April 8 and 9 during which some of the national team managers will call for squads of 26, as at Euro 2020 (Covid-related) and the 2022 World Cup (mid-season related), instead of the planned 23.

“There is one more Uefa meeting where there’s been a little bit of talk amongst some of the coaches about possibly increasing that,” Southgate said.

Unless Uefa does listen to coaches, the final 23 has to be confirmed on June 8, the day after England’s final warm-up game, against Iceland at Wembley. Southgate has not decided on the size of the “training” squad he will announce on May 21 for the games with Bosnia
