The Old Thatched Cottage in Weston-super-Mare could get a new thatched roof.

The beloved family-run restaurant — which is believed to be the town’s oldest building — is well known for its eponymous thatched roof.

But the entrance and restaurant’s sign is on the large flat roofed extension to the side.

A planning application has been submitted to North Somerset Council to install a thatched roof on this flat-roofed structure.

A statement submitted with their application said: “The roof of the western extension to the building is currently a modern flat roof which is in stark contrast with the traditional pitched, thatched roof of the cottage.

“It is considered that the proposed thatched roof, which reflects original cottage, would represent a demonstrable improvement to the character of the building and its setting.”

The cottage is Grade II listed but the flat roofed extension is excluded from this, and it is hoped that the thatched roof will enhance the building.

The original section of the building dates back to the late eighteenth century and was described as a “‘a quaint and curious structure with a high thatched roof” in a guidebook in 1847.
