A POPULAR dessert shop in Burnham-on-Sea has been taken over by new owners who have ambitious plans for the future of the business.

Nicola Moon first began working as a delivery driver at Just Desserts, on College Street, but her baking talents were soon recognised, and in February this year, she took on the business from the previous owners.

By pure coincidence, Freddie Saunders, now a co-owner of the business, was visiting Just Desserts on her birthday, when she approached Nicola to join her on the new venture.

“I just thought I'm missing out on an opportunity here if I don’t do something," Freddie said.

“It was just so nice.”

Just weeks later, the pair had agreed to work together, and plans were put into action to change what was formerly Just Desserts, to the new and improved Not Just Desserts.

From this week, the eatery will expand its menu to offer a range of paninis, sandwiches, quiche, soup, ploughman's, jacket potatoes, and other light lunches,.

The new savoury food options will not replace the pre-existing sweet treats and dessert menu, with cheesecake, brownies, scones, cookie pies, cream teas and more still available for sweet-toothed locals.

"At the moment we offer afternoon teas, bubble teas, normal tea and coffee..." Freddie added.

Not Just Desserts will also be offering buffets and catering for functions, birthdays, and other events in Somerset.

Nicola Moon said it felt 'really good' to be given the opportunity to take on the business and put her sublime baking skills to good use.

In fact, she is so committed to the cause, that she was back in work just hours after baking through the night from 7:30pm until 2:30am to get everything prepped and ready for the day, when speaking to the Weekly News.

She explained how she hopes to elevate the business's reputation and quality by baking everything fresh and from scratch.

"It’s all freshly baked on the day," Nicola said.

"I have my own waffle mix, everything’s freshly baked.”

The business first opened in March 2020, replacing the former Britannia Building Society and Co-operative Bank at the premises.

Nicola and Freddie mark the third set of owners at the business, after it closed down in January 2023, but was revived just months later under the same name.
