New Delhi: A woman in northern Thailand was shocked to find hundreds of maggots living in her nostrils after complaining of a blocked nose. The 59-year-old woman complained of a stuffy nose and facial pain for over a week. Initially, she thought that it was because of breathing problems due to excess dust in the air. However, after suffering a nosebleed, she spotted dozens of tiny maggots coming out of her nose.
Immediately, she went to Nakornping Hospital, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, for a checkup where Dr Pateemon Thanachaikhan studied her and observed certain foreign bodies in her nostrils after doing an X-ray, the report in Mirror added.
Over a hundred maggots were revealed after the medical team inserted an endoscope inside the woman’s nostrils. The patient’s condition drastically improved after removing the maggots from her body.
According to the doctor, if the insects were left they could have spread to nearby organs such as the eyes or brain, causing disability and even death, The Mirror reported.
Reports claim that people who live in the country's northern regions, like Chiang Mai, are more prone to respiratory conditions, particularly rhinitis and allergies.
In 2022, a man found flesh-eating maggots living in his ear canal after he began experiencing earache, according to a report by Mirror. After consulting a doctor about the itching, bleeding, and pain in one of his ear panels, he was hospitalised.
When the 64-year-old allowed medical professionals to examine him directly, they found that "numerous motile larvae" were blocking his ear canal. They were able to remove the larvae after thoroughly cleaning the patient's ear with water and by using a specific kind of forceps.
The man was diagnosed with a myiasis infection at the Hospital Pedro Hispano in Matosinhos, Portugal. Unfortunately, the flesh-eating larvae damaged a small part of his eardrum.
