- Motivation
eBird (Q5322614) is a highly-regarded online database of bird observations, organised by species or sub-species (see examples). Operated by Cornell Lab of Ornithology (Q2997535) and National Audubon Society (Q1646000), it has global coverage (see example 2). - Discussion
WikiProject Taxonomy has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.
- Support looks good to me. I pinged the taxonomy folks to let them weigh in. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:14, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
- Support Me too. Anyone contact wikiproject birds?....Pvmoutside (talk) 19:04, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
- Comment Yes, @Pvmoutside: I did: WP Project Birds: Proposal to use eBird taxon ID's in Wikidata. –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 19:36, 28 December 2016 (UTC).
- Comment For what purpose? Not appropriate as a source of vernacular names as uses unacceptable Americanisation of names of non-American birds (considered very offensive cultural imperialism in e.g. UK, Australia, etc.) - if used, names must be tagged en-us, not en. - @MPF: Who is proposing this database as a source of vernacular names? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:38, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Pigsonthewing: no-one has said what it is to be used for; vernacular name harvest is one possibility that I had to consider. - MPF (talk) 22:30, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

- Oppose as above, I don't recognise {{sic}] Gray Heron as a UK bird. A US-based project that of course only accepts US spellings Jimfbleak (talk) 20:12, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Jimfbleak: Just to be clear: you're opposing the use of an ID from an American database because that database uses American spelling? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:36, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
- Well, once upon a time, a user suggested a property for ARKive: this is now used on a very wide scale as a source for vernacular names. - Brya (talk) 12:45, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

- Support Would be valuable contribution to taxonbar on enwiki William Avery (talk) 23:41, 28 December 2016 (UTC)
- Support Looks fine to me. I am not too concerned about the vernacular name issue. It's more important to have the scientific name right. Cheer Scott Thomson (Faendalimas) talk 03:59, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- Support. YULdigitalpreservation (talk) 19:31, 3 January 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose - Although I am an American, common names should be spelled based on where the species is located. RileyBugz (talk) 16:56, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
- This proposal is not about the spelling of common names on Wikidata. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:47, 7 January 2017 (UTC)
