Anthony Albanese is the 31st and current Prime Minister of Australia. He has been the Member for Grayndler since 2 March 1996.
Anthony Albanese was born in Sydney, New South Wales, in 1963. He is the son of Carlo Albanese and Maryanne Ellery. He was named after his first cousin, Anthony Howett, who died in 1959. His parents met on the ship TSS Fairsky en route from Sydney to Southampton, England, where his father was working as a steward. Maryanne became pregnant, but Carlo was already engaged to a woman in his home town in Italy. On her return to Australia, Maryanne adopted the surname Albanese.[1][2]
Albanese was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents. Until he was in his teens, he believed that his parents had married in Europe and his father had died in a car accident.[1]
He married New South Wales State politician Carmel Mary Tebbutt in 2000. They have one son, Nathan. They separated in 2019.[2]
He studied economics at the University of Sydney, where he became involved with student politics, graduating in 1984.[1]
Albanese won the Federal Parliament seat of Grayndler in the 1996 election. He was promoted to the Shadow Cabinet in opposition in 2001. When Labor won the 2007 election under Kevin Rudd's leadership, he was appointed as Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Minister for Regional Development and Local Government and Leader of the House of Representatives. He retained these positions when Julia Gillard replaced Rudd as Prime Minister in 2010.[2]
In June 2013, Albanese was sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister under Rudd, who had defeated Gillard in a party leadership spill, and held this position until Labor's defeat at the September 2013 election.[2]
He was appointed Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Shadow Minister for Tourism, and Shadow Minister for Cities under Labor leader Bill Shorten. After Shorten's resignation following Labor's defeat at the 2019 election, Albanese was elected unopposed as Leader of the Labor Party.[2]
He became the 31st Prime Minister of Australia on 23 May 2022 as a result of the Australian Labor Party winning the 2022 election.
