In 1917 his name was legally changed to Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor. He was crowned King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India on 12 May 1937 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England, and styled 'By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India.' He abdicated as Emperor of India on 22 June 1948.

Albert Frederick Arthur George Saxe-Coburg and Gotha at birth, (George VI Windsor, King of the United Kingdom) was born on 14 December 1895 at York Cottage, Sandringham, Norfolk, England. He was the son of George V Windsor, King of the United Kingdom and Mary Prinzessin von Teck.

He was educated at Royal Naval College, Osborne, Isle of Wight, England.

He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1913 in the service of the Royal Navy.
He gained the rank of Acting Lieutenant in 1916.
He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1918

He gained the rank of Captain in 1925.
He gained the rank of Admiral in 1926.
He gained the rank of Vice-Admiral in 1936
He gained the rank of Admiral of the Fleet on 11 December 1936.[2]

He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1916.
He fought in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, for which he was mentioned in despatches.
He was created 1st Baron Killarney [U.K.] on 3 June 1920.
He was created 1st Earl of Inverness [U.K.] on 3 June 1920.
He was created 1st Duke of York [U.K.] on 3 June 1920.
He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1921.
He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1923.
He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1925.
He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1926.
He was decorated with the award of the Royal Victorian Chain in 1927.
He was invested as a Knight, Order of St. Patrick (K.P.) in 1936.
He succeeded to the title of HM King George VI of the United Kingdom on 11 December 1936. [2]

Marriage

He married Lady Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, daughter of Claude George Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Nina Cecilie Cavendish-Bentinck, on 26 April 1923 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England. [2]

Death

On the morning of 6 February 1952, George VI was found dead in bed at Sandringham House in Norfolk. He had died from a coronary thrombosis in his sleep at the age of 56.[1]

Burial

He was buried on 11 March 1952. [2]

I remember the day the King died. We were still in primary school which was where we heard the news. Most of us wept which seems very odd nowadays. It is hard to explain just how important he was to us (from the newsreels I suppose) and I daresay it was because of the war. Churchill was the war leader but the King was the "father". Playtime was very sober that day.
