Berthold Konrad Hermann Albert was born in 1905. He passed away in 1981. He was an architect and planned the reconstruction of Berlin as the capital of Europe for Adolf Hitler. He became Nazi Germany's armaments minister during World War II under Adolf Hitler, who considered Speer to be almost like a son to him. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in the Nuremberg trials. He claimed to have been a specialist who only fulfilled his duties, without any knowledge of the crimes the Nazi-regime had committed. However, after his death it was determined that he was present at the Posen speech of Heinrich Himmler that described in detail the "Final Solution", and in 2005 documents were discovered which indicate that Speer was actively involved in the extension of the Concentration Camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Many scholars today contend that Speer would surely have been hanged at Nuremberg had these facts been known at his trial in 1946.
