A BUSY main road in Gloucestershire has reopened after a crash involving two vehicles.

The A40 in Gloucestershire was closed westbound between the M5 J11 (Cheltenham) and the A417 (Gloucester) due to a two-car crash this morning (Thursday).

All emergency services were in place to the incident, which happened at around 3am.

Traffic was diverted via local routes, with motorists informed to allow for extra time on their journey.

National Highways later confirmed that the incident was now clear, with the A40 reopen westbound.

Highways thanked motorists for their patience.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called at 2.54am to a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A40 between Elmbridge Court roundabout and Junction 11 of the M5.

“One engine, from Gloucester North, was sent to make the scene safe and clear debris from the road.

"The stop message was received at 3.47am.”

South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said ambulance crews conveyed one patient to Gloucester Royal Hospital 

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: "We were called at 02:54hrs on Thursday 28 March to a road traffic incident near Gloucester.

"We sent a double-crewed land ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene and conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Gloucester Royal Hospital."

Gloucestershire Police said: "Emergency services were called to a collision involving two vehicles on the A40, travelling towards the Elmbridge Roundabout in Gloucester, at around 2.45am this morning, Thursday 28 March.

"The collision involved a Mazda and a marked police car which was on a routine patrol.

"The road was closed to recover the vehicles and was reopened at 5am.

"One person was taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital where they were treated for a minor head injury before being discharged."
