Matt Bomer and Nathan Lane to star in Golden Girls-inspired sitcom Mid-Century Modern set in Palm Springs from Ryan Murphy

Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer have signed on for Mid-Century Modern, a modern update on the Golden Girls set in Palm Springs from producer Ryan Murphy at Hulu.

Nathan, 68, will play the Dorothy-like character originated by Bea Arthur while Matt, 46, will be the ditzy Rose-like character made beloved by Betty White.

Legendary actress Linda Lanvin, 86, will play the Sophia role as Nathan's character's mother.

Will & Grace creators Max Mutchnick and David Kohan developed the series and James Burrow will direct the pilot, Variety reported.

The logline for the series reads: 'As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.'

In the original pilot for the Golden Girls, one of the four roommates was gay

'The series follows three best friends – gay gentlemen of a certain age – who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother and a naked Gen Z housekeeper,' Hulu said in a release.

'A successful businessman with one foot in retirement, Bunny is forever in search of love, but he first has to be convinced he’s worthy of it.

'Like her son, Sybil’s strengths are her weaknesses: wise, caring, and iconoclastic – which sometimes means she’s critical, smothering and amoral,' the synopsis read.

'Jerry left the Mormon Church and his marriage in his early 20s after his wife informed him and the rest of the congregation that he was a homosexual.

'Now a latter-day saint in the literal sense of the term, Jerry is pure of heart. He is also hard of body and soft of head,' it concluded.

'Mid-Century Modern stars Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, and Linda Lavin as Sybil Schneiderman, Bunny’s mother.'

Golden Girls has long been beloved by the LGBTQ+ community. It ran for seven seasons on NBC, ending in 1992.

It starred Arthur, White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty as four older women living together in Miami.
