As Prince William and Kate prepare to celebrate their wedding anniversary, we look back on

It's been a roller coaster 12 months for the Prince and Princess of Wales. And, as the couple celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary today, there will be much for them to reflect upon together. There were some wonderful highlights, including the Coronation of William's father, King Charles III and Queen Camilla - which marked a major gear change, not just in the Monarchy, but in the lives of the new Prince and Princess of Wales. And there was a great deal of hard work, too, as Kate and William carried out a combined total of 237 official engagements, including such notable occasions as  the Welsh Guards' St David's Day Parade, Trooping the Colour, the Festival of Remembrance, the Royal Variety Performance and the Together for Christmas Carol Service. Yet more recent months have brought sadness and concern -coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, signalling a shift in the monarchy as well as William and Kate's future roles. However, following these celebrations, Kate faced a personal health challenge, undergoing major abdominal surgery and being diagnosed with cancer. In her public statement, she lovingly spoke about how William has been a 'great source of comfort and reassurance' during this challenging time.

Both are tall and elegant. Both were middle-class commoners when they married into their respective royal families. So, perhaps comparisons between  Queen Mary of Denmark and our own Princess of Wales were inevitable. There is more to it than that, however. Both women have a carefully considered approach to style, working within the tight constraints of what is expected from a royal. Mary and Catherine have a shared appreciation, too, of ethical brands and of British designers in particular. According to the late Karl Lagerfeld , the design guru at the helm of Chanel for many years, Australian-born Mary could even have been considered Kate Middleton 's 'big sister' in fashion terms.

The Duke of Edinburgh was a larger-than-life character, but even he paled to next to his colourful aunt, Marie. A relative of Napoleon Bonaparte she was a fascinating character, famed for her all-consuming interest in sex and psychoanalysis, her friendship with Sigmund Freud and her unconventional lifestyle. Born Marie Bonaparte in 1882, Marie was the great-granddaughter of Napoleon I's rebellious younger brother Lucien. She was fabulously rich thanks to her maternal grandfather François Blanc who made his fortune on real-estate development in Monaco, buying 97 percent of the casino in Monte Carlo.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Harry insists that the US is now his residence but specialist expatriate law firm Blevins Franks warns of the pitfalls: 'HMRC will look for any indication that you see Britain as your homeland and may return one day. Even stating in your will that you wish to be buried in the UK could work against you.' So has Harry stipulated where he will be interred?

Made from strawberries grown in her sun-drenched Californian garden, decanted into jars with handwritten labels, and delivered in bountiful presentation baskets to an elite group of friends and influencers, this is no ordinary jam. For almost two weeks now, the debut product from American Riviera Orchard, Meghan Markle 's elusive new lifestyle brand, has been making waves on social media. Jars have been appearing on the Instagram profiles of her nearest and dearest, including comedian Mindy Kaling , polo player Nacho Figueras and actress Abigail Spencer , who trilled 'This jam is my jam' - and draped herself over a jar for a fawning al fresco photoshoot. No, not names we would recognise here, but let's face it, we are not her target audience.

There was widespread shock last summer when an executive at music streaming platform Spotify publicly described the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (left) as 'f****** grifters'. Bill Simmons (right), who goes by the title Head of Podcast Innovation and Monetisation, used the intemperate putdown last summer, just hours after Harry and Meghan's podcast deal (inset) with Spotify, reported to have been worth £15million, was axed.

Kate, 42, has been made a Royal Companion of the organisation, which was founded by King George V in 1917 to recognise outstanding achievements in the arts, sciences, medicine and public service. The Mail understands it is the first time that a member of the royal family has been appointed in the order's century-long history. Sources say it is a symbol of the 'great esteem' the princess is held in by her father-in-law, King Charles. As well as being a personal thank you for her loyal service to the Crown since she married Prince William almost 13 years ago, it is also an acknowledgment of her contribution to the arts. The Princess of Wales has received a unique honour from the King in recognition of her years of public service after being appointed to The Order of the Companions of Honour. Rebel Wilson has claimed a member of the Royal Family invited her to a drug-fuelled orgy at the home of a US tech billionaire. The Australian does not name the royal, but gives three hints: he is male, it happened in 2014 and he was 'fifteenth or twentieth in line to the British throne'. In her memoir, Rebel Rising, she tells how she got 'a last-minute invite to a tech billionaire's party' from the royal who had told a male friend, 'We need more girls'. What a perfect opportunity to find a boyfriend, I thought.' According to the book, the medieval-themed party was held at a rented ranch just outside Los Angeles .

The is the historic moment the first memorial statue to the late Queen is unveiled on what would have been her 98th birthday, featuring her beloved Corgis at her heels. The unveiling was done to the cheers of crowds - and the approving barks of nearly 50 corgis as a delegation of dogs from The Welsh Corgi League were in attendance. The eye-catching seven-foot bronze statue went on display on what would have been the late Queen's 98th birthday with a group of corgis stealing the show.Over her decades on the throne, the late Queen owned an estimated 30 corgis and dorgis (dachshund and corgi mixes) and perhaps became the most famous Pembroke Welsh Corgi owner in history.

When 23-year-old Anne Coke married the Scottish aristocrat Colin Tennant at St Withburga's Parish Church in Norfolk on 21 April 1956, it must have seemed like a fairytale match. After all Lady Anne, the daughter of the 5th Earl of Leicester, was a wealthy and beautiful former Debutante of the Year whose family had been close confidantes of the Royals family for generations. Her grandmother was Edward VIII's mistress and her father an equerry to George VI, while she had been maid of honour at the late Queen's coronation three years earlier and would later become lady-in-waiting to Princess Margaret. Indeed, Anne had been great friends with the young Princesses Margaret and Elizabeth ever since they had played together as children both at Sandringham and at her own grand home a few miles away - Holkham Hall, a stunning Palladian mansion set in its own glorious 25,000-acre estate. The suave and charismatic Hon. Colin, meanwhile, was heir to Baron Glenconner and the family's 3,500-acre estate at The Glen, near Traquair in the Scottish Borders. As part of Princess Margaret's rather raffish set, he knew many glamorous people from the world of literature, art and show business.

The ties between the Spencers and the Monarchy go back not just generations but centuries. Even today, the family can claim descent from a number of royal bloodlines and over such a period, they make the Windsors look like arrivistes. The wedding of Lady Jane Spencer, then, was bound to be an event - and it was no surprise when she, like little sister Diana, chose someone with connections. True, Robert Fellowes was not heir to the throne. But he was already assistant private secretary to the late Queen - and a first cousin of Ronald Ferguson, the father of Sarah Ferguson - when he married Lady Jane at Westminster Abbey on April 20, 1978.

King Charles' goddaughter, India Hicks, posted about her mother, Lady Pamela Hicks, on her Instagram account and revealed the precious story behind her unexpected birth in 1929. India began the post and said: 'My mother's arrival into this world was somewhat of a surprise.' She then went on to say that her grandmother, Edwina Mountbatten, was eight months pregnant with Lady Pamela when she went on a trip to Spain for a few days. She added that her determined grandmother was 'not going to be stopped' from going abroad.

Queen Elizabeth was a wise woman, writes RICHARD EDEN. And when she needed to take decisive action, she did. That is why she decided the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could not be allowed to combine royal duties with seeking their fortune overseas. And why she ignored Prince Harry's efforts to persuade her otherwise. In his best-selling memoir, Spare, Harry tries to convince readers that his grandmother was bamboozled into taking a tough line against him and Meghan by scheming courtiers. In my opinion, however, Her Late Majesty knew exactly what she was doing and why. Now, King Charles needs to take a leaf out of his mother's book - and be decisive when it comes to his younger son and his role as a Counsellor of State. As things stand, California-based Prince Harry could still be called on to stand in for his father in some circumstances - which is surely now intolerable.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Princess Beatrice's pal Alice Naylor-Leyland (pictured) has surprised friends by announcing that she and her husband have had a child using a surrogate mother. She already has three children with Tom Naylor-Leyland (pictured), who is heir to a baronetcy and the £176million Fitzwilliam landowning fortune. 'I'm aware it was greedy to have this burning desire to complete our family,' she says. 'But due to too many complications, setbacks, miscarriages and then being told I was no longer able to carry, we decided to venture down the world of surrogacy.' Sharing a photograph online of the newborn baby's foot with a pink tag, she thanks the unnamed surrogate mother.

RICHARD EDEN: Television personality Susannah Constantine , who was the girlfriend of Margaret's son, David, the Earl of Snowdon , for six years in the 1980s, has made the extraordinary revelation that the princess would secretly enter the holiday homes of rich and famous people who lived on Mustique in the West Indies. Margaret was given a ten-acre plot of land on the southern tip of the tiny island as a wedding present from flamboyant Scottish aristocrat Colin Tennant, the 3rd Lord Glenconner, who bought Mustique and transformed it into a playground for the jet set. 'She loved snooping round people's houses,' says Susannah, 61, the former co-host of What Not To Wear. Referring to the overbearing and sinister housekeeper in Daphne du Maurier's gothic novel Rebecca, she adds: 'She was like Mrs Danvers, and virtually had a master key for every house on the island.'

Queen Mary, King Frederik, Queen Margrethe and her sister, Princess Benedikte, posed outside Fredensborg Castle today alongside Margrethe's beloved sausage dog Tilia, who was also in attendance. The family celebrated privately at the royal residence, a setting used for important events in the family such as weddings, silver wedding anniversaries and birthdays. The monarch opted for a sapphire blue tie, matching the same colour scheme as his wife in a display of sartorial solidarity amid rumours of marital strife in recent months.

The Duchess of Sussex is due to start filming her first solo series for Netflix on Tuesday, but viewers hoping that it will give them a glimpse into Meghan's enviable lifestyle are going to be left sorely disappointed. For The Daily Mail's Richard Eden can disclose that the programme will not be filmed at the home she shares with Prince Harry. Instead, the series - which will, according to the American streaming giant, 'celebrate the joys of cooking and gardening, entertaining and friendship' - is to be shot at another property in their expensive California neighbourhood. 'Netflix has rented a house in Montecito for filming,' a source said.

The royals have paid tribute to victims of the horrific knife attack in Sydney today (pictured, left) with King Charles III and Queen Camilla saying they are 'shocked and horrified' by the incident, while Kate and William (right) sent thoughts to the families of those involved. In a statement this afternoon, the King said: 'My wife and I were utterly shocked and horrified to hear of the tragic stabbing incident in Bondi. 'Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been so brutally killed during such a senseless attack.'

The Argentine polo player, who is based in Florida, posted a snap on Instagram of himself eating the jam just days after his wife first promoted it. Ignacio 'Nacho' Figueras, dubbed by Tatler as 'the David Beckham of polo' posted snaps of himself spreading the jam on a piece of buttered toast and biting into it on Instagram - just days after his wife Delfina Blaquier first promoted the product.

FROM the moment that Prince William began dating Kate Middleton two decades ago, he made it clear that his relationship with his in-laws was non-negotiable. Since then, the close-knit Middleton family has been integrated into the fold of the Royal family and invited to key events such as Royal Ascot , the late Queen's Diamond and Platinum Jubilees and the King's Coronation. Now Kate's mother Carole has become 'the driving force' as the family helps care for the Prince and Princess of Wales in the wake of Catherine's cancer diagnosis -  stepping into the breach to help look after George, ten, Charlotte, eight, and Louis, six.

Prince Harry, 39, made another cameo in the posh world of polo as he huddled with players on the sidelines of a US Open quarterfinal on Saturday. He joined the Valiente team behind the scenes as they prepared to take on Coca-Cola at the National Polo Center in Wellington, Florida. The prince cut a low-key figure in black jeans and a grey t-shirt - but his arrival was given away by a dozen-strong Netflix film crew who were on hand to shoot his interactions with the awe-struck players. He and Meghan were the main attraction Friday afternoon as they attended a charity game at the Royal Salute Polo Challenge at the swank Grand Champions Polo Club.

The Duchess, 42, was seen in Palm Beach this weekend as she joined her husband Prince Harry for his new Netflix show about the genteel world of polo. She ditched her elegant white sundress and towering stilettos for a more casual outfit for Saturday's shoot, donning a light blue linen button-down shirt and breezy white pants. Completing her ensemble were matching cream-colored Hermes flat sandals, priced at $760 on the French designer brand's website. Harry and Meghan were the main attraction Friday afternoon as they attended a charity game at the Royal Salute Polo Challenge at the swank Grand Champions Polo Club.

Queen Mary and King Frederik have been plagued with rumours of marital strife since Frederik's night out with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova last year. And the new pictures of the royal couple will do little to squash rumours of difficulty between the pair, who once boasted a 'fairytale romance'. The couple, who took over the Danish throne in January appeared very frosty with one another during a March trip to Verbier, an exclusive ski resort in Switzerland.

Some will see it as another example of a mid-life relationship that has sadly run its course. Others will doubtless caustically note it offers further proof that far from guaranteeing domestic happiness, membership of the Royal Family is positively an impediment. For Peter Phillips, however, yesterday's news that he has split from his long-term girlfriend Lindsay Wallace - after the agony of his broken first marriage - there is the additional burden of knowing that of all Queen Elizabeth's grandchildren, he has been the unluckiest in love.

Queen Letizia of Spain and her husband King Felipe looked sombre in navy blue and black as they paid their respects to the king's cousin at the mass at Castrense Cathedral in Madrid. Fernando Gomez-Acebo passed away aged 49 on March 1 following a long battle with Covid-19 and ill health. He is the Spanish monarch's first cousin and King Juan Carlos's nephew. He is also the youngest son of Infanta Pilar and Luis Gómez-Acebo. (Pictured: King Felipe with his wife Queen Letizia at the funeral of Fernando Gomez-Acebo in Madrid)

The Princess Royal has topped the league table for Royal duties for many years so it comes as no surprise that she's started this year at full speed. The variety matches the quantity. Ranging from being President of the Save the Children Fund to a role as Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps, nothing seems to ruffle her. At the start of the year she, accompanied by her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, Anne visited Sri Lanka where, among her many duties she met the President.

She's already a well-respected blogger, having experienced great success with The Tig before meeting - and marrying - her Prince Charming. So, it might have come as no surprise when, just a few weeks ago, the Duchess of Sussex unveiled a new lifestyle site named American Riviera Orchard. The new brand is expected to sell a range of tableware, recipe books and jams created by Meghan Markle. Not to mention edible pet treats, make-up and bird seed, all among the products now listed with the American patent office. On this day, in  April 2017, the former actress closed down the Tig - referred to as her 'passion project' - ahead of the wedding to Prince Harry the following year.

For all the portraits, busts and fine furniture, I have no doubt that it will be the personal stuff which lingers longest in the public's memory. As in any stately home, it is the tell-tale signs of family life - a wedding photo, perhaps, or even a trampoline in a ducal garden - which always catch the eye. And Balmoral Castle is, above all, a family retreat - as the first busload of tourists are about to find out when the King throws opens its doors to the paying public for the first time. This is arguably the most famous castle in the land, its place in history assured as the home where our longest-reigning monarch departed this life for the next (still doing her duty to the end). It has been reimagined in numerous dramas and films and has featured in many famous memoirs. Yet, to the Royal Family, it is synonymous with escape, peace, privacy and happy memories.

Queen Mary of Denmark looked typically stylish today as she attended the Freedom Museum in Copenhagen, amid rumours that she dropped out of a planned trip with her husband Prince Frederik. The Australian-born royal, 52, donned an elegant long trench coat which she tied at the waist as she headed out to the Museum to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the National Guard. The outing comes amid speculation that Mary may have spent the Easter break away from Prince Frederik as their flag remained raised over their mansion in Amalienborg Castle - meaning at least Frederik, Mary or their son Crown Prince Christian was in attendance. The family often travel for Easter, with the palace telling Danish publication Her&Nul last week that Queen Margrethe, 83, will act as head of state as the whole family travel out of the country. However, it seems a last minute change took place, with Mary possibly staying behind in Copenhagen.

Prince Harry and Meghan could start mending their broken relationship with the Royal Family if the Duchess of Sussex returns to the UK alongside her husband for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games, royal sources have claimed. Former Suits star Meghan, who was seen showing off her acting skills while reading to kids at a Los Angeles children's hospital in newly-released photos, has not returned to Britain since Queen Elizabeth II 's funeral in September 2022. The Duchess of Sussex did not come back for King Charles's coronation in May 2023 which Prince Harry attended alone. But in a royal-style visit in California , Meghan attended the LA Children's Hospital on March 21 and led a 'Literally Healing' session. In footage of the visit released yesterday, Meghan greets the group of children as they meet to hear her read the stories, including Rosie Revere, Engineer, which she labels as 'one of my favourites'.

The Duchess of Sussex, 42, who lives in Montecito with Prince Harry and their two children, Prince Archie, four, and Princess Lilibet, two, visited the hospital on March 21, when she led a 'Literally Healing' session. 'Children were laughing and singing as The Duchess turned into character with every page as she read patient favourite books like Rosie the Riveter, Pete the Cat and I Saw a Cat', read a statement. In footage of the visit, Meghan greets the group of children as they meet to hear her read the stories, including Rosie Revere, Engineer, which she labels as 'one of my favourites'. Gesturing and changing the sound of her voice to add more to the characters' quotes, Meghan's acting roots were clearly paying off.

Earlier this month, the royal mother-of-three (left), 42, announced in an emotional video message that she is undergoing 'preventative' chemotherapy after cancer was discovered following her major abdominal surgery in January. In the video (inset), the Princess explained how 'it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them' and to 'reassure them that I am going to be okay'. Speaking to PEOPLE magazine, an insider revealed that the Prince and Princess of Wales' children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, (right) have been a source of support during Kate's treatment. Describing how they 'buoy [Kate and William] with smiles', the insider said: 'The children are at the centre of their world.'

Would he or wouldn't he? It wasn't just the crowd waiting patiently outside St George's Chapel this morning who were wondering if the King might exchange a few words with the public for the first time since his cancer diagnosis. Every right-minded royalist will have been having similar thoughts. In the event, he did not merely swap pleasantries. This was a full-scale, traditional royal walkabout with - crucially - handshakes. And not just one or two. If proof were needed that our monarch is getting better, then here it was. He didn't just look well but he was manifestly enjoying being back among his people, greeting a long line of well-wishers from as far afield as New Zealand and the USA with an outstretched, ungloved hand. Even the late Queen, when in the rudest of health, did not undertake Easter Sunday walkabouts like this. The routine was always the same: a chat with the Dean of Windsor, a posy from a child or two, a wave to the waiting crowds and back to the castle. So St George's Chapel regulars were more than pleasantly surprised by the King's enthusiasm.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And when it comes to her sense of style, the Duchess of Edinburgh certainly has a keen admirer in her daughter, Lady Louise. It seems that Louise, 20, is more than happy to raid her mother's rather impressive wardrobe and has recently been photographed giving some old hits a new life. Who wouldn't recycle when the labels on offer include the likes of Stella McCartney , Suzannah and ME+EM?

Pity the second son in any royal family. As author Tina Brown puts it, 'the only certainty is that, as the years go by, his importance will decline as he slides inexorably down in the line of succession.' The career of this prince seemed to have been in decline ever since he left the Royal Navy in 2001. A spell as the United Kingdom's special representative for international trade and investment did nothing to burnish his reputation. It was a role 'that allowed him to swan around the world at government expense playing golf,' writes Brown in her best-selling book, The Palace Papers.

EXCLUSIVE

The King is understood to be keen to attend the ceremony, which will be one of the last with living veterans, but may not be well enough to make the trip. His doctors may also advise against it.

The Royal Family could be put in a 'difficult position' if Prince Harry's Invictus Games returns to the UK for the first time since he and Meghan moved to the US (Harry pictured at the 2023 Düsseldorf games).

It was supposed to be the start of a new start for Diana, Princess of Wales . Instead, 1994 ended up as her lowest point in the maelstrom her life would increasingly become in the last five years of her life.

Tracey Hanan, 56, (not pictured) showed Queen Camilla a wooden board which had been used to hold a pork pie wedding cake when she married her late husband Tony in 2017. Mrs Hanan had been left distraught when the etching on the board bearing their names began to fade following her husband's death from prostate cancer in 2021. But the item was returned to its former glory when she visited the Shrewsbury Repair Cafe - which restores damaged items - and was one of the volunteer groups who met the Queen (pictured) on Wednesday.

Europe's oldest monarch (left), 87, smiled warmly alongside Queen Sonja (front left), Crown Prince Haakon (back far right), Crown Princess Mette-Marit (back right), Princess Ingrid Alexandra (centre), and Prince Sverre Magnus (back far left). Despite only being a short period since the operation, the monarch appeared relaxed and cheerful as he sat beside his wife, Sonja, 86, at the front of the image.

Camilla was given a tour of Shrewsbury Farmer's Market on Wednesday, where she spent time speaking to organisers and traders, featuring food, crafts, jewellery and craft stalls. Charlie was stood amongst the crowd with his mother Aimee when she encouraged him to ask Camilla for a picture. Aimee can be heard in the video saying: 'Go on Charlie, go on Charlie'.

Lady Tatiana Mountbatten, from London, has celebrated the christening of her baby daughter Elodie in a stunning church ceremony (left). Tatiana, who is the daughter of King Charles's cousin George Mountbatten, 4th Marquess of Milford Haven, shared the carousel of images to her Instagram account last week. The 33-year-old from London welcomed baby Elodie, now five months, with her husband Alexander 'Alick' Dru last October (pictured right, just after Elodie was born).

EPRHAIM HARDCASTLE: The greater media presence triggered by the King's (left) decision to attend church on Easter morning gives Prince Andrew (right) an opportunity to strut his stuff on the walk to Windsor's St George's Chapel. It's just a month since he elbowed his way to a front-row seat for King Constantine's memorial service. The demoted royal is expected to join the King and others to receive communion at a private service in the castle before the walk to the chapel where the winking cameras await.

Meghan Markle hopes to sell products from bird seed to pet treats and gardening shears to napkin rings with her new lifestyle brand American Riviera Orchard. The Duchess of Sussex has listed a range of items in documents sent to the US Patent and Trademark Office, also including bath soaps, curtains and yoga blankets. Other items in the papers - which were submitted on March 13 but have only now emerged - are ketchup, incense burners, flower pots, pet food and recipe books. It comes after DailyMail.com revealed Meghan is now eyeing Gwyneth Paltrow 's beauty crown as she added cosmetics and beauty products to the list of goods . The 42-year-old Duchess wants to market fragrance sachets, bath and shower gels and salts, hand soaps, body creams, bath oil, body lotions and other cosmetics. Meghan is also hoping to sell scented oils, reed diffusers, fragrances and non-medicated pet grooming products such as shampoo and conditioner for dogs.

Record producer Rodney 'Lil Rod' Jones' filed the bombshell lawsuit against Diddy and claims that his 'affiliation' to the Duke of Sussex and other stars gave him and his associates 'legitimacy'. Lil Rod's lawyers claim guests were drawn to Diddy's alleged sex-trafficking parties because of his 'access to celebrities such as famous athletes, political figures, artist, musicians, and international dignitaries like British Royal, Prince Harry', court documents filed in New York say. The court documents filed in the US last month do not suggest any wrongdoing on Prince Harry's part. MailOnline has asked the Duke of Sussex to comment. While Harry is not facing a legal claim, it is not the first time the royals have been embroiled in serious court allegations in the US, with Prince Andrew forced to settle a lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre , a sex slave of Jeffrey Epstein . It came hours after Diddy's Los Angeles and Miami mansions were raided by the Department of Homeland Security. Combs, a billionaire, is already facing lawsuits from three women and has lost a host of commercial deals in the wake of the claims.

The 59-year-old comedian told his audience on The Late Show on CBS last night that he does 'not make light of somebody else's tragedy' - but he fell short of apologising to Kate who has been the subject of cruel conspiracy theories in recent months. Colbert - a self-confessed anti-monarchist - accepted that his jokes had 'upset some people', adding that he was aware 'any cancer diagnosis of any kind is harrowing for the patient and for their family'. The presenter - who had made jokes about Kate's 'disappearance' - also said that he and everyone on the programme 'would like to extend our well wishes and heartfelt hope that her recovery is swift and thorough'. In a monologue on last night's show, he began by saying: 'You know, folks, I don't know if you have noticed, but we do a lot of shows and I tell a lot of jokes, and I tell jokes about a lot of different things, mostly what everybody's talking about.' Colbert's lack of apology sparked a fresh backlash, with Queen Elizabeth II's former press secretary Dickie Arbiter writing: 'He might be full of regret for himself but he didn't apologise.'

Windsor will be witnessing a very different sort of Easter this year. Last time, we saw a full turnout of the Royal Family in the spring sunshine at St George's Chapel. The chief concern back then was the countdown to the Coronation. This year, it is going to be a much smaller affair. We are likely to see the King and Queen but his health, of necessity, demands a much-reduced crowd around him. The Princess of Wales and her family are not expected at all. They want to make the most of the Easter holidays and maximise her three wishes: time, space and privacy. The contrasting images of Easter Sunday 2023 versus 2024 will, therefore, paint a pretty bleak picture.

The Princess of Wales' emotional video (left) of her sitting on a park bench telling the world about her diagnosis has touched the hearts of the nation and was supposed to bring an end to months of frenzied online speculation of her whereabouts and health. Kate, 42, will now retreat to the sanctuary of her family home Anmer Hall, in Norfolk, with Prince William and their children 'to close off from the world', no doubt hoping to be left in peace in her fight against the disease. Yet bizarre conspiracy theories continue as cruel trolls spread ludicrous speculation that Kate's video was AI-generated. Other veiled sick jibes have seen the video reposted with Princess Diana and Meghan Markle's face superimposed over Kate's in an attempt to 'prove' the simplicity of creating a deepfake video.

The family released Kate's video announcement to the press a few hours after the school closed so that her children would not immediately face questions in the playground after the news was made public. 'George is ten now and can't be shielded from any of this now,' a palace source told The Sunday Times. 'Once it's at the school gate and in the school playground, he won't be able to avoid it.'

Prince William supported Princess Kate's decision to announce that she was being treated for cancer and is said to be 'extremely proud' at her 'courage and strength'. The Prince of Wales played an important part in his wife's decision to reveal her diagnosis to the world and wishes she did not have to do it, he knew it was her choice and he supported her. 'It was her decision, it wasn't begrudged and he fully supported it,' a close friend of Prince William's told The Sunday Times.

Kate Middleton, 42, was admitted to a London hospital in January for planned surgery and returned home to Windsor to continue her recovery. Doctors, however, discovered an unspecified form of cancer in tests taken after her operation. In a video message today, Kate revealed the diagnosis 'came as a huge shock' but she was now in the 'early stages' of preventative chemotherapy treatment. Here, MailOnline details her health history.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: With invitations dispatched for Duke of Westminster Hugh Grosvenor's wedding, a society guessing game develops as to whether Harry will show at the event in June. If he does, it would be the first time he and William were under the same roof since their father's coronation. Sources report that Grosvenor, 33, is staying neutral, maintaining a good relationship with both, leaving it up to them to resolve their family drama. However, the home team could have an advantage. The Duke is godfather to Prince George who could be a page boy on the big day in Chester Cathedral. Perhaps Harry might replicate his attendance at the Diana Legacy Awards last week when he appeared via video.

Online speculation has spread in recent weeks about the whereabouts of the Princess of Wales, 42, while she continues to recover from abdominal surgery, with palace aides saying they would not comment on her recovery. However, Kate was captured on camera by a member of the public walking cheerily with Prince William outside Windsor Farm Shop on Saturday, reportedly looking 'super relaxed'. Conspiracy theories about Kate have continued to spread like wildfire since her outing this weekend, with some claiming the footage was not of Kate but instead a lookalike of the royal. The Archbishop of Canterbury (right) has slammed the 'gossip', saying that speculating about the health of the princess is 'wrong'. Sir Keir Starmer (inset) also urged the public to stop speculating about Kate's health, telling them to 'leave her alone'.

For his heroic attempts to protect Princess Anne, Jim Beaton (left, and top right being visited by Anne in hospital) was awarded the George Cross. But the more enduring souvenir from his brush with death 50 years ago today - when crazed gunman Ian Ball (inset) tried to kidnap the Princess Royal - is a fragment of bullet embedded in his hand. Mr Beaton, 81, was an inspector in the Metropolitan Police and served as Anne's bodyguard for five years. Ball ambushed Anne as she and her then husband Captain Mark Phillips were being driven down The Mall late at night (bottom right, the royal limousine). Mr Beaton was shot three times by Ball after his own gun jammed but escaped with his life when passing former boxer Ronnie Russell punched the gunman in the head. Speaking today to mark the 50th anniversary of the kidnap attempt, Mr Beaton told the BBC how Ball 'shot me in the chest' and told of the 'bit of bullet' that is in his right hand.

Conspiracy theorists have taken to social media to cast doubt on a photo showing the Princess of Wales smiling during a shopping trip over the weekend. An 'incredibly happy' Princess Catherine was seen in public on Saturday as she joined her husband for a trip to their local farm shop in Windsor. An image from the visit showed the mother-of-three in good spirits, and appearing healthy and relaxed, as she chatted with Prince William on the return to their car. The news will have reassured fans of the couple that Kate is recovering well from her abdominal surgery in January, which has left her unable to carry out public engagements. It comes after wild social media speculation and gossip about Kate's health and whereabouts, which is understood to have left the couple deeply upset. However, the furore shows no signs of abating among some, as some cynics took to  social media to denounce the images as fake, accusing them of showing a body double, a different woman or having been altered by AI .

IT is the royal biography that made headlines around the world - 'Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story', by the author and esteemed Daily Mail journalist Robert Hardman. Every extract, featured over several days in the Mail and The Mail on Sunday last week, has offered of fascinating revelations about an extraordinary moment in Monarchy: the end of the Queen's life after 70 years on the throne and the beginning of her eldest son's reign.

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Queen Camilla will lead the extended Royal Family at Monday's Commonwealth Day service with the absent King ordering all able-bodied working royals to attend. This shines an unwelcome light on the royal sickbay (the King, Kate and Princess Alexandra) as well as underlining the frailty of others. The Duke of Kent (89 this year) now needs a stick or wheelchair to get about and the Duke of Gloucester is 80 in August. And the one-time baby of the Windsor clan Prince Edward is 60 on Sunday.

He is known as the dashing society photographer who became Princess Margaret's husband.Born on this day in March 1930, Lord Snowdon rose to the very highest levels of the establishment. Yet Antony Armstrong-Jones was an intriguing figure in his own right, one of the most glamorous men in post-war London even before he married the princess in 1960.

While the Prince of Wales has been at his wife's side - and representing her at engagements - Carole (pictured left holding baby Kate, inset with grandson George and right with her daughter at Ascot), 69, also looks to have been eagerly on-hand to do what she can. There were previously concerns that the length of Kate's stint in the exclusive London Clinic suggested the procedure was 'serious'. The exact details of the princess's condition have not been revealed but the Palace said previously it was not cancer-related and that Kate wished her personal medical information to remain private. However, one thing is clear - she has supportive team tending to her recovery - with her mother at the helm alongside William. Speaking to PEOPLE , a palace insider said that Carole and her husband, who only need to take a short drive from Bucklebury, Berkshire to Windsor, are already 'an enduring factor in the upbringing of their grandchildren'.

The portrait was as unforgiving as one might expect: grim, coarse-featured and imposing. One critic suggested the monarch should have Freud locked up for lese majeste. Yet as Brown explains, the Queen herself displayed her customary lack of personal vanity when the painting was unveiled. 'Very interesting,' she remarked gnomically.

Her Majesty has a clear diary and is set to jet off on holiday via a private flight tomorrow, while also making time for family in the coming weeks. Camilla, 76, has been picking up the extra load since King Charles's shock diagnosis last month, which saw him take a step back from public duties. She has completed 13 official engagements since Charles's condition came to light, continuing with her own plans and appearing alone for events that were meant for both King and Queen. This included an engagement on Valentine's Day, when Camilla went solo to Grosvenor House in London to an event celebrating Shakespeare, of whom the King, 75, is a lifelong fan.

A royal photographer has claimed Meghan Markle was 'noticeably' more tactile than the other royals when she joined the family. Award-winning photographer Samir Hussein captured the famous picture of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex linking arms under an umbrella at the Endeavour Awards in 2020 and described the picture as 'unusual'. Harry and Meghan are known to have broken from the usual formality seen in royal relationships by openly displaying affection and holding hands when out in public. Mr Hussein told The Telegraph: 'It was very noticeable when Meghan came on the scene just how tactile she was, like holding the Duke's hand and being arm-in-arm, so that was quite unusual.' The image of the pair looking adoringly at one another in the rain went viral and was taken at one of the couple's final engagements before they stepped down as senior royals. It will now go on display in London in a new exhibition charting the Hussein family's photography of the monarchy over the years.

The prominence of 'pleased-as-punch' Prince Andrew at this week's Windsor memorial service served as a vivid reminder of the troubles now besetting the Royal Family. And highlighted how untenable the prince's position has  become. That's the view of Richard Eden, writing in the latest edition of his Palace Confidential Newsletter. With, King Charles and Kate indisposed for health reasons, Prince Harry unavailable and Prince William unexpectedly absent, Prince Andrew found himself on the front row of the thanksgiving service for the life of King Constantine of Greece on Tuesday.

As Lady Gabriella, 42, begins to come to terms with the tragic loss of her husband Thomas Kingston at just 45, she will likely find strong support from the wider Windsor family, with the King and Queen both thought to be highly fond of the couple. Minor royal Lady Gabriella, a writer whose 2019 wedding saw the Queen and Prince Philip attend, is known for her relaxed, chatty demeanour and is highly thought of by senior royals. (Pictured from left:

The King and I, by the legendary theatre-writing composers, Rodgers and Hammerstein is once again a West End hit, this time starring Call The Midwife's Helen George. The story tells of Anna Leonowens, a widow who travelled to Siam in the early 1860s to teach English to King Mongkut of Siam's wives and children. Although it is set over 150 years ago the musical, and the later film, are considered so controversial in Thailand - as Siam became known in 1959 - that it has been banned there for over 70 years.

Richard Eden believes that the new-look website, Sussex.com, is an 'audacious' move which will undermine King Charles and his heir, Harry's brother, the Prince of Wales. 'The California-based couple have rebranded their website to make it more regal and even started taking advantage of their old  "Sussex Royal" title - something they told the late Queen they would not do,' he writes.

Prince Harry and Meghan have hit out at criticism of their Sussex.com website and royal rebrand - defiantly insisting they 'will not be broken'.  The couple, who have been embroiled in a series of controversies this week, issued the extraordinary statement this evening. They have come under fire in recent days over their new Sussex.com website, in particular Meghan's coat of arms - which critics claim is a breach of their promise to the late Queen Elizabeth when they acrimoniously quit front-line royal duties.

A group of 'Brits' who serenaded Prince Harry and Meghan Markle by singing 'God Save The King' were captured on film as the royal couple put on a united front in their first public appearance since their royal rebrand. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in the stunning Whistler Blackcomb ski resort in British Columbia for a two-day trip from California to promote next year's Invictus Games, the first time it will involve winter sports.

Prince Harry and Meghan should be stripped of their titles to stop them shamelessly profiting off the Royal family , according to the Mail's talk show, The Reaction. In the latest episode, out today, Mail columnists Sarah Vine and Andrew Pierce set their sights on Harry and Meghan's new website 'Sussex.com' to ask whether the couple are trading off their Royal titles and are in breach their agreement with the late Queen. Without the Royal family, Ms Vine said, Harry would simply be a 'slightly thick, balding ex-soldier' while Meghan would be a 'moderately attractive, not very successful ex-actress'. After sources close to the former working Royals tried to quash any furore over the naming of the website, Ms Vine added: 'What really irritated me was that "their people" responded to criticism... by saying that Sussex is their surname. It is not their surname, their surname is Mountbatten-Windsor. Mr Pierce interjected: 'It is a shameless way, in my view, to monetarize them by reminding the world that they are Royal.'

Harry will tell crowds of his fond memories of their time spent in the country when the couple attend the Vancouver Whistler 2025's One Year to Go celebrations later this week, according to The Telegraph. The event, which will take place between Wednesday and Friday, aims to raise awareness of the 2025 Invictus Games, which will take place February 8 and February 16 next year. Harry and Meghan are said to have relished their time spent on Vancouver Island, where they went after leaving their royal duties in 2019. The Duke has previously spoken about how Canada felt like home to him and that 'we could imagine spending the rest of our lives there'. Meghan is also said to hold a great affection for Canada having lived in Toronto while filming 'Suits'.

As family tensions sometimes threaten to pull the House of Windsor apart, there is, thankfully, one figure who enjoys the confidence of all the disparate Royal factions and quietly keeps the crucial lines of communication open when emotions are running high. This figure, who celebrates her 67th birthday today, has always shunned the limelight - particularly since Diana's tragic death in August 1997 - and it is this discretion that explains why she has been so successful in remaining close to King Charles and Queen Camilla, Prince William and, especially, to Prince Harry.

For all their many accomplishments, the Windsors have rarely been thought of as sparkling musicians. Princesses Margaret and Elizabeth both learnt to play the pianoforte, although it was Margaret rather than her sister, the Queen, who would become associated with the performing  arts. Charles had a go with trumpet and the cello but not, as he admits, to any great effect. Horses have mostly come before harmony. Yet that doesn't mean the royals haven't tried and, in a few cases, succeeded in mastering musical instruments - delighting the rest of us when their hidden talents are unexpectedly revealed...
