Tina Fey reveals if she's 'open to' a Mean Girls sequel... 20 years after the original movie debuted

Tina Fey isn't closing the door on Mean Girls 2.

The comedian got candid about whether a sequel starring Lindsay LohanRachel McAdamsAmanda Seyfried, and Lacey Chabert could ever happen.

'Oh,' Tina exclaimed while on Good Morning Britain. 'I don't know. I would like to see those four women in the movie again. I don't know, I feel like if you took those characters where they are now, it's just the Real Housewives franchise.'

However, the 54-year-old feels that their character's growth may change the concept of a second film.

Tina added, 'Also, hopefully, by the end of the movie, they have actually gotten better and grown. So, hopefully, they wouldn't be mean anymore in their adult lives? I don't know. I am open to it.'

But after writing the script back in 2004, the Date Night actress is now leaving it in the hands of others.

'If another writer has a pitch for it, they can take it Paramount,' Tina continued. 'I don't think I have it in me. As much as I would love to reunite those ladies.'

The Saturday Night Live alum may not be far off.

A source told People in April that Lindsay and Rachel are also open to returning to the suburbs of Illinois.

The insider revealed that the Freaky Friday star 'wants to do another and has a good relationship with her former cast members.'

'They are her friends and have been,' the source added. 'Another film would be great for her and for audiences who loved the original.'

They shared that Rachel is also game, stating that the Titanic actress 'would likely do a Mean Girls sequel if everything presented to her made sense.'

Rachel did skip out on the Walmart ad last fall that starred Lindsay, Amanda, Lacey, Daniel Franzese and Rajiv Surendra shopping for the holidays.

Despite her absence, the insider said that 'she has no regrets about not doing a Walmart commercial, which is a different thing.'

'She is super busy,' they stated, 'but likes her former cast members and would be interested in talking about a sequel if it becomes a reality.'

Rumors of a Mean Girls reunion have been circulating for years, with Lindsay and Amanda reuniting in 2022 to discuss the prospects of a second movie.

'I would kill just to do one week, all of us playing our own roles on Mean Girls on Broadway,' the Dropout star told Lindsay during a chat for Interview Magazine before asking,  'A Mean Girls 2 is never going to happen, is it?'

'I don’t know,' Lindsay confessed. 'I heard something about it being a movie musical and I was like, “Oh no.” We can’t do that. It has to be the same tone.'

'Yeah,' Amanda agreed, 'It would just be completely different.'

'Anyway, Tina is busy,' she continued. 'She’ll get around to it. Listen, we’re all part of each other’s worlds whether we like it or not, and it is really nice to be in contact as adults.'

And although plenty has changed in the past 20 years, the cast members still have a bond.

'Everyone’s still the same,' Lindsay said, 'It’s fun to have certain memories that we can’t share with anyone else.

The duo also reflected on their time together in the early aughts.

'I think people still see us as teenagers,' Lindsay admitted, to which the Veronica Mars vet replied, 'As Karen and Cady.'

Amanda continued, 'That was my first movie. You were in the middle of the whole thing and you created a really fun vibe. I didn’t know how good it was going to be.'

But Lindsay always knew they were creating something special.

'I had a feeling, just because you don’t always have that much fun making movies and I knew it was going to show through,' the Parent Trap alum recalled. 'But I never realized what it would be, still today.'

Despite major success, there was a point in time when Amanda didn't want recognition for her part in the teen comedy.

'Ten years ago I used to be like, “Yeah, yeah, I was Karen in Mean Girls, for fuck’s sake.” Now I’m like, “I was Karen in Mean Girls!”' she confessed. 'I’m very proud of it.'

Addressing her costar, Amanda added, 'You had a lot to do with where it went and what it was. I don’t know if you know that. I’m sure you felt the pressure but it didn’t seem like you did. You were working really young, and you were really good, but you were still a kid.'

Along with looking up to Lindsay, the Seven Veils star shared some memories she holds close to her heart all this time later.

'I’ll never forget any of those moments,' Amanda reminisced. 'We killed Toronto. That Sutton Place was just a real sh--hole at the time. But that bar was great. We were way too young, having way too much fun, and the movie ended up being more than anyone could have imagined. We’ve had such crazy lives.'
