Sir Norman Bettison has resigned as chief constable of West Yorkshire police force, says Les Carter from the West Yorkshire police authority. The resignation comes amid controversy over his role in the smearing of fans killed in the Hillsborough disaster. The authority says it accepted his resignation on Wednesday morning with immediate effect
