WORKING AT THE BBC

As the world’s largest and longest-standing public service broadcaster, we have a unique role that informs culture and democracy in the UK and overseas.

Attracting and retaining the very best talent is at the heart of delivering for our audiences.

BENEFITS BUILT AROUND YOU

Our benefits are designed to reward, support and develop our people. We all have a role in building a creative, inclusive culture that’s full of opportunity. We want our staff to thrive, produce their best work and feel valued for their output.

They reflect our values and are reviewed regularly to make sure we’re delivering for colleagues and the way they live and work.

These are four benefit areas

  • Two BBC colleagues having coffee

    A DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE WORKPLACE

The BBC is for everyone – and should include everyone. Diversity and Inclusion is hardwired into everything we do.

To ensure our content is inclusive and representative of all groups and communities, we must build teams that draw on the widest range of experiences, talent and ideas – reflecting both modern Britain and the world.

  • Three BBC Studios employees in Mumbai

    MORE ACCOUNTABILITY, HIGHER PERFORMANCE

We want to build high performing, engaged teams across the BBC. Along with ‘myConversation’, we reward high performance through ‘myRecognition’ and hold leaders to account through 360 reviews and the Leadership Index.

  • Two BBC employees sharing a computer screen

GOLD STANDARD CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

We want everyone to have an exciting and fulfilling career at the BBC, which is why everybody has a 'myConversation' twice a year to set career goals with their manager; and we invest in a wide range of development programmes.

In 2021/22, more than 4,000 colleagues took on new roles and almost 15% of those were promotions.

  • Two BBC employees working together

    SUPPORT FOR WORKING LIVES

From our new parent and carer leave policies to menopause support, flexible working and a comprehensive wellbeing package, we aim to offer support and flexibility when you need it most.

    SUPPORT TO GO GREENER

Our incredible content educates audiences about the natural world, the climate crisis and sustainability. We’re at the forefront of sustainable production practices, committed to achieving Net Zero by 2030 and proud signatories of the Climate Content Pledge.

As a responsible employer, we are committed to having a positive impact on our planet and supporting our people to make greener personal choices.

EMPLOYEE NETWORKS

Across the BBC, we have a range of dedicated and specialist staff networks that bring together people from under-represented backgrounds to network and help us make better-informed decisions.

Find out more about our Diversity & Inclusion plan and our Employee networks.

TRADE UNIONS

At the BBC, we are committed to fostering constructive relations with our recognised trade unions in line with our Charter obligations.

Depending where you work at the BBC, you may wish to join one of our recognised unions that form the BBC Joint Unions. They negotiate pay, terms and conditions of employment, policies and local changes plus provide individual support, advice and representation for members.

As a member of a trade union you have the opportunity to vote on any of the key issues that affect staff like pay offers and pensions and terms and conditions. Unions in the BBC are recognised to represent particular groups in negotiation. The NUJ represents journalists, Bectu represents all other staff at the BBC (including craft, technical, production, and office roles), and Unite represent particular areas of production and maintenance staff.

Management and unions, including officials and BBC reps, regularly meet at local, divisional and national level. Unions may run workplace related campaigns and lobbying on issues important to you. Working together our aim is always to improve the working lives.

MU (Musicians Union) collectively represent the BBC five Orchestra and BBC Singers based across the UK.
