How can we create quality jobs for young people living in rural areas to tackle the growing global #hunger and #poverty crisis? Rural youth face the double challenges of age-specific vulnerabilities and underdevelopment of rural areas, limiting their job options. This undermines socio-economic stability, fueling food insecurity, inequality and migration. In 2017, Germany's #G20 presidency launched an Initiative to boost rural youth employment, notably in Africa. Five years later, the G20 Development Working Group assessed its progress. 📉Bilateral aid declined from 2022-23, driven by a drop in sovereign lending by 6.5%. 📈Bilateral grants, on the other hand, increased by 1.7%. The countries who provided the highest shares of bilateral official development assistance (#ODA) as sovereign loans were France (19%), Japan (57%) and Korea (32%). In 2023, official development assistance (ODA) for refugee costs within donor countries dropped by 6.2% to $31 billion, comprising 13.8% of total #ODA, down from 14.7% in 2022. For seven Development Assistance Committee countries, in-donor refugee costs still represented over a quarter of their ODA in 2023. After a decline from 2021-22, aid to the least developed countries, sub-Saharan Africa and Africa all rebounded from 2022-23. This is because donors spent less of their bilateral aid on refugee costs within their own countries and more on countries in need. 🔵 Least developed countries (#LDCs): Bilateral aid from Development Assistance Committee members reached $37 billion in 2023, up 3% from 2022. 🔵 Sub-Saharan Africa: Aid hit $36 billion, up 5%. 🔵 Africa: Aid rose to $42 billion, up 2%. UN Sustainable Development Goal 10, "reducing inequality," aims to tackle income disparity within and between countries. 🌐 But how exactly do we measure progress toward this objective? A study of income distribution in Egypt from 1999 to 2015 suggests that monitoring at a subnational level is critical for revealing the extent and reality of inequality.
