Happy King's Day, Netherlands! 🇳🇱 ⭐ If you're wondering how to celebrate, our colleague Duco from the Fundamental Rights Office has some recommendations: 🎉 “You know, the nicest thing is - to go the night before to The Hague when they are having the Kings Night. You put on your orange outfit, everybody's just in the street, everywhere is music.” For the following day, Duco recommends heading to the bustling Amsterdam. 🛍️ “On King’s Day you don’t have to pay taxes. So, you can just sell whatever, a lot of children are selling their old things. It’s like one big flea market. All the bars are playing music, DJs are displaying their skills, there are concerts. Typically, I would go to a park in Amsterdam, where people play some old-fashioned Dutch games.” Duco has lived the last 16 years in Poland. While he misses the celebrations, he feels at home both in Warsaw and Frontex. 👨🏫 “I have always been working with people who are the most vulnerable in the mixed migration flow. And now, since Frontex is growing so fast, I'm busy with training, which is nice as well. There is a lot of discussion on fundamental rights, on victims of trafficking, what to do in certain situations. It's an important topic and everybody has their opinion. It’s a very interesting field of work.” 👮♀️👮 6 Frontex officers work in the Netherlands currently, supporting air borders and return activities.

Last week, #Frontex Consultative Forum conducted an on the spot visit to Cyprus.   The human rights experts visited reception and detention facilities. They observed key Frontex activities and met with the Cypriot authorities, Frontex standing corps personnel, and the national ombudsman. The visit focused particularly on access to asylum procedures, identification of vulnerabilities and protection of vulnerable persons, unaccompanied children, dignified treatment in all related border procedures and access to the complaints mechanism.       The Consultative Forum will share its observations and suggestions with Frontex and its Management Board to further improve the protection of fundamental rights.   The Forum brings together key European institutions, international and civil society organisations to provide fundamental rights advice to the agency. 🛳️ Last week, Frontex conducted a two-day workshop in Catania with the Working Group on Boarding Vessels. The workshop took place within the area of operation Themis. Its objectives were to update the handbook on boarding in Frontex-coordinated Joint Maritime Operations 📖 and to strengthen the EU cooperation on coast guard functions 💪   ⚓ The event was attended by several maritime experts from EU countries, as well as participants from Fundamental Rights Office and International Committee of the Red Cross. The focus was given to exchanging experiences, analysing case studies, evolving procedures and testing new state-of-the-art equipment in the process of boarding vessels performed within law enforcement-related activities and other coast guard functions, like search and rescue operations 🆘   🇮🇹  Both Guardia di Finanza and Corpo delle Capitanerie di Porto - Guardia Costiera contributed actively by showcasing their procedures and equipment. Happy #EarthDay! 🌍 💚 Today every greening action and gesture counts, and border guards may become border guardians! So is the case of #Frontex officers deployed to Lampedusa. They collected 300 kg of plastic and litter as their individual contribution to keeping the island clean. 🌊 “The waters of #Lampedusa are infested with plastic and debris due to the high number of landings there. The island is where we work and live and we wanted to contribute to local efforts to keep the place clean. It was inspiring to see us all come together to make a meaningful change in our nearest neighbourhood,” told us the officers participating in the initiative 🤝 👮👮♀️ 20 EU border and coast guards volunteered to take part in the clean-up action in their free time. They took care of everything – from getting protective equipment and tools to obtaining all formal consents and authorisations from Lampedusa Municipality and Guardia Costiera 🇮🇹 🌱 What’s your green move for today?

On 8 to 12 April, a new edition of the Frontex Firearms Detection Course/Train The Trainer took place in Ungheni in the premises of the Moldovan Border Guard. The course, which builds and expands on the theorical and practical knowledge already aggregated in the Handbook on Firearms for Border Guards and Customs, was organised by the Agency in cooperation with Moldovan authorities and was entirely dedicated to trainees hailing from different Ukrainian authorities. During the training Ukrainian border police, police and customs officers had an opportunity to refresh their knowledge on illicit weapons trafficking methods, to upgrade their detection capabilities, to practice how to operate necessary equipment, as well as to refresh their skills in conducting a detailed assessment of risk indicators linked to potential traffickers. This particular Firearms Detection Course, training future trainers within Ukrainian institutions, is a part of the broader Frontex Action Plan in support of Ukraine, focusing particularly on combating cross-border criminal threats resulting from the ongoing war of aggression conducted by Russia.

The Frontex Fundamental Rights Office, together with the EU Fundamental Rights Agency and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency the UN Refugee Agency, conducted training for the Border Police and Frontex Officers in Bulgaria. Almost 50 participants attended the sessions on independent border monitoring, communication techniques, the identification and referral of vulnerable persons, and core fundamental rights obligations related to border management. The programme also included a session on the functions and powers of the Ombudsman as a National Preventive Mechanism in relation to the rights of refugees and migrants. This initiative was organised under the European Commission Cooperation Framework with Bulgaria on border and migration management.

Frontex joint operation in North Macedonia – one year of cooperation already! Exactly one year ago, Frontex launched the joint operation implementing the status agreement with executive powers between the EU and North Macedonia on the operational activities carried out by Frontex at North Macedonia’s borders. The standing corps officers wearing the EU insignia participated in the first operational briefing and took up their posts at border control units in Tabanovce and Skopje airport. To this day, Frontex has deployed 595 officers to North Macedonia to support the local partner with various tasks such as border checks, surveillance, debriefing, and screening of migrants. Expertise was shared in various areas, including document examination, motor vehicles, cross-border crime, and cultural mediation. Frontex’s presence on the external borders of the EU in the neighbouring countries serves multiple purposes. It supports the efforts of local border guards, allows for the exchange of expertise, practice, training, and fundamental rights standards. The results of cooperation with North Macedonia are great and the collaboration continues! Joint Operation North Macedonia 2024 is in full swing!

We had two days of great discussions at the European Police Congress #EPC2024 at our #Frontex booth. We are thrilled that so many people came to find out more about our tasks, current challenges and the opportunities to work with us. We had a chance to exchange experiences with our uniformed colleagues from European police forces and to talk about managing EU external borders. Our Executive Director Hans Leijtens also took part in the event by giving a keynote speech and engaging in discussions with other participants.
