UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. We lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. We deliver life-saving assistance, help safeguard fundamental human rights, and develop solutions that ensure people have a safe place called home where they can build a better future. We also work to ensure that stateless people are granted a nationality. We work in over 130 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions. UNHCR’s greatest asset is our workforce. We work with passionate, talented and creative individuals who want to use their skills for good. Thanks to people like you, we can develop solutions that enable people who have been forced to flee to restart their lives and build better futures. Meet Victoria and her furry friend Skya 🐶 Victoria and her brother were staying at a collective site in Kharkiv, Ukraine, for people who had been displaced by the war. When their mother passed away, their great-grandmother traveled all the way to Kharkiv to assume the children’s legal guardianship with support from UNHCR and its partner. UNHCR Ukraine and its partner Right to Protection provide vital legal support to displaced or other war-affected people in Ukraine.

Can good listening skills make you a better humanitarian?👂 Anja Klug, Head of UNHCR’s Office for Switzerland and Liechtenstein, explains how listening makes her better at her job. #HumanitariansAtWork #StaffSpotlight
What makes you better at work 😉 We were discussing among colleagues 🤷♀️ 🤷🏽♂️ what was the one thing which makes you better at work. Being put on the spot nothing came to my mind and then too many ideas popped up: knowledge; experience; information sharing; networking…🤔 I always find it hard to decide for the 🎯ONE thing. But 💥 I knew what would be on top of my list: listening. 👂 Simple? Too simple? VERY DIFFICULT. 🧗🏽♂️ It sounds so easy, but in fact it requires a lot and I cannot claim excellency 🏅 of any sorts. Nevertheless, I learned throughout my carrier how important it was. And thankfully I had the support of a great coach, colleague and friend, Helmut Buss (CPCC_ACC) who gave me some beginner courses. 👨🏽🏫 It all starts with listening to myself. 👩🏽 This means to find out what is truly 👉🏽 important for me and what course of action I really want to take. I need to put aside all the loudenesses, attractions and distractions, the senseless demands. And then on that basis it means listening to the other with my body and my mind, to the colleagues in my team 🧍♀️🧍♂️🧍, but also to each individual woman and men with which we work and partner 🤝. Too often, even in the simplest conversation I realize how hard it is to be quit, put all other thoughts away and focus on the other, what he or she has to say with words, body language and otherwise. 👂Listening requires concentration, patience and interest in the other person, amongst others. To be a good listener👂 requires exercise 🎽 as everything else, but if I do 🎉whole new universes and relationships may be opening up. I understand the world around me and know what action best to take. 👍 Try it out for yourself! 😲 #humanitariansATwork.

“Refugees deserve to dream just like everyone else.” ⚽️ Imagine fleeing your home, leaving everything behind, only to find solace and joy in the game of football. In an exclusive essay for GLAMOUR, British footballer Lucy Bronze reflects on how societal attitudes to refugee women and girls must change. Lucy recently met with young refugee girls, whose stories are filled with resilience, friendship, and the limitless possibilities that football brings. Together with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, BARÇA FOUNDATION is empowering displaced women and girls worldwide through sports.
