Parents' Guide to GCSEs in 2024

If your child is in a secondary school in England, Northern Ireland or Wales, they will be preparing to sit their GCSEs.

These standardised exams offer them qualifications in their chosen subjects. Read this guide below for more information about what these exams are, when they are, and how you can help your child.

Your child will be preparing for their GCSE exams, so it is good to know the dates they will take place so you can best support your child during this time. Though these dates may change closer to the exam period, we have collated the most up-to-date exam dates published by each exam board for you to use as a general guide.

GCSE exams will take place from Monday, 6 May and continue until Friday, 21 June.

It is important to be aware that your child may have non-exam assessments, such as modern foreign language speaking tests and practical science experiments, which could take place before this period due to individual schools deciding the date they take place.

The following GCSE maths exams will take place on Thursday, 16 May (morning)

• AQA maths paper 1 - foundation and higher

• CCEA Mathematics units 1 and 2 - foundation

• CCEA Mathematics units 3 and 4 - higher

• Edexcel maths paper 1 - foundation and higher

• Eduqas maths paper 1 - foundation and higher

• OCR maths paper 1 - foundation

• OCR maths paper 4 - higher

• WJEC maths paper 1 - foundation, intermediate and higher

The following GCSE maths exams will take place on Monday, 3 June (morning)

• AQA maths paper 2 - foundation and higher

• CCEA maths unit 5 - foundation

• CCEA maths unit 6 - foundation

• CCEA maths unit 7 - higher

• CCEA maths unit 8 - higher

• Edexcel maths paper 2 - foundation and higher

• Eduqas maths paper 2 - foundation and higher

• OCR maths paper 2 - foundation and higher

The following GCSE maths exams will take place on Monday, 10 June (morning)

• AQA maths paper 3 - foundation and higher

• Edexcel maths paper 3 - foundation and higher

• OCR maths paper 3 - foundation and higher

Other dates

WJEC maths unit 2 for all tier students will take place in the morning of Tuesday, 12 June 2024.

GCSE English language exam dates 2024

• AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC English language paper 1 exams will take place on morning of Thursday, 23 May.

• CCEA English language unit 1 will take place on the morning of Wednesday, 8 May.

• AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas OCR and WJEC English language paper 2 exams will take place on morning of Thursday, 6 June.

• CCEA English language unit 4 will take place on the morning of Monday, 20 May.

GCSE English literature exam dates 2024

• AQA, CCEA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC English literature paper 1 exams will take place on morning of Monday, 13 May.

• AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR and WJEC English literature paper 2 exams will take place on morning of Monday, 20 May.

• CCEA English literature paper 2 will take place on the morning of Thursday, 30 May.

Biology single science and combined science exam dates 2024

• AQA, Edexcel, OCR biology paper 1 and WJEC biology paper 1 for both combined and single science students will take place on the morning of Friday, 10 May.

• CCEA biology paper 1 for both combined and single science students will take place on the morning of Friday, 17 May.

• AQA, Edexcel, OCR biology paper 2 for both combined and single science students will take place on the afternoon of Friday, 7 June.

• WJEC biology paper 1 will take place on the morning of Monday, 10 June.

• CCEA biology paper 2 for both combined double award and single science students will take place on the morning of Tuesday, 11 June.

• CCEA biology paper practical theory for combined students will take place on the morning of Tuesday, 11 June.

• CCEA biology paper 3 (practical theory) for single science students will take place on the morning of Thursday, 20 June.

Chemistry single science and combined science exam dates 2024

• AQA, Edexcel, OCR chemistry paper 1 and WJEC chemistry paper 2 for combined and single science students will take place on the morning of Friday, 17 May.

• CCEA chemistry paper 1 for both combined double award and single science students, and CCEA chemistry paper 2 for combined single award students will take place on the morning of Wednesday, 22 May.

• AQA, Edexcel and OCR chemistry paper 2 for both combined and single science students will take place on the morning of Tuesday, 11 June.

• WJEC chemistry paper 1 will take place on the morning of Thursday, 13 June.

• CCEA chemistry paper 2 for both combined double award and single science students, and CCEA chemistry practical theory for combined double award students will take place on the morning of Friday, 14 June.

• CCEA chemistry paper 3 (Practical Theory) will take place on the afternoon of Friday, 21 June.

Physics single science and combined science exam dates 2024

• AQA, Edexcel, WJEC and OCR physics paper 1 for both combined and single science students will take place on the morning of Wednesday, 22 May.

• WJEC physics paper 1 will take place on the morning of Monday, 17 June.

• AQA, Edexcel and OCR physics paper 2 for both combined and single science students will take place on the afternoon of Friday, 14 June.

• WJEC physics paper 2 will take place on the morning of Friday, 24 May.

• CCEA physics paper 1 for both combined double award and single science students will take place on the afternoon of Friday, 7 June.

• CCEA physics paper 3 for combined single award science students will take place on the afternoon of Friday, 7 June.

• CCEA physics paper 2 for both combined double award and single science students will take place on the morning of Tuesday, 18 June.

• CCEA physics practical theory for combined double award students will take place on the morning of Tuesday, 18 June.

• CCEA physics paper 3 (Practical Theory) for single science students will take place on the morning of Monday, 24 June.

The OCR 21st Century combined science paper will take place on the morning of Friday, 7 June.
