Kane Hemmings scored the only goal as Tranmere secured a 1-0 League Two win at Leyton Orient which was not enough to secure a play-off place.

The Merseysiders' hopes of finishing in the top seven depended on them claiming victory on the day while requiring both Swindon and Sutton to fail to win, but both rivals did edge their matches to ensure Rovers will be playing fourth-tier football again next term.

Orient made the early running, with Aaron Drinan and Paul Smyth going close.

Only an upright denied the O's from going in front in the 30th minute when a 25-yard free-kick from Tom James hit a post.

However, the visitors went ahead against the run of play in the 37th minute when Hemmings ran onto a cross from Josh Dacres-Cogley to send a close-range header into the net.

Despite having much of the possession after the break, Orient failed to test the visitors' defence.

However, they were denied the opportunity of an equaliser in the 76th minute when referee Seb Stockbridge initially awarded them a penalty for handball before changing his mind after consulting with a linesmen.

Just wasn’t to be. Not sure MM is the future for us. Need to be positive especially at home. Sign decent strikers.!

We ended the season with what we deserved. Nothing. So predictable when Mellon kept signing strikers with no goal scoring pedigree, until Hemmings which was too late. No player in double figures is not what wins promotion. If we'd gone up, we'd have been straight back down. Other clubs seem able to sign scorers but rarely Tranmere. No change next year.

That denied penalty obviously spoilt Mellon’s plans for another mind numbing 1-1 draw. Things have to change for next season. Whilst I’ve renewed my season tickets, this mind numbing football is less than entertaining and, more importantly, hasn’t delivered success. Shrewsbury fans warned us about this, I now see what they mean.

Was handball everyday of the week. But just like last week vs crawley you win some lose some. Fair play to rovers They had 1 chance and put it away. Its been a better half to the season. And next year looks promising

Orient have high hopes of doing well next season, but they need some new players who can compete at this level. Let us hope they buy and sell wisely!!

Strange how results go isn't it... This result also reflects the silverware both teams have won; Leyton Orient = 0, Tranmere Rovers = 1 (Birkenhead Examiner Chronicle Port Sunlight 'Soap' cup in 1753 featuring a dramatic last minute winner against Hoylake Athletic casuals)
