Omar Bogle celebrates after beating Grimsby goalkeeper Harvey Cartwright to score — Newport striker Omar Bogle played for Grimsby between 2015 and 2017

Omar Bogle's eighth goal of the season was not enough to earn Newport County victory over Grimsby Town.

Newport were the better of the two sides for large periods, but were unable to find the breakthrough at Rodney Parade until the 72nd minute.

Bogle tapped home a cross from Shane McLoughlin to score against his former club.

But the lead was cancelled out within five minutes as Danny Rose's close-range effort earned Grimsby a point.

Newport remain 17th in League Two, while Grimsby are two points below in 18th.

Newport's next match is a Welsh derby away to Wrexham on 23 December, while Grimsby host Harrogate.

Newport manager Graham Coughlan: "I think we deserved to win and should have won but we chucked it away. Again it was the unreliability and lack of a clean sheet.

"One or two players I want to be able to trust let me down. They don't normally do that but it was a very soft goal.

"We are just chucking points away too easily and I have to address that. One or two players will need to be changed, one or two things will need to happen to stop that.

"I know my remit was to stay in and survive but I want a little bit more and we can achieve that with one or two new additions or fresh faces."

I am always reluctant to say an away side did not deserve anything from a game in which they restricted their hosts to only one goal. Newport clearly missed the presence of top scorer Will Evans until he came off the bench on 82 minutes. And why does manager Graham Coughlan often use only two substitutes? It was only recently he was complaining he could not name the full seven-player compliment.

Draw was a fair result but again very impressed with Payne down the Right, he helped the team retain possession and put in some very good Balls today. Not the finished article but improving with every game.

Let's be honest Newport are a limited team but they kept the ball well today but just needed to take their chances.

But that's 1 loss in 6 games

The match stats, goal difference and league positions don't seem to agree with the dismissive match report. The commentary suggested Grimsby finished by far the brightest, looking for the win, with Newport content with a draw.

I think that was Bogles best game for Newport County should have scored a couple of goals in first half were the better team but Grimsby were a threat on counter .A point we will take and move on utc

A draw was a fair result. Both sides had chances to ‘nick’ it. Omar, where is your loyalty? Not very nice to score against the fans that used to worship you. Mariners now making steady progress. Keep it up, lads.

Someone translate? Typical lower end League 2 match, plenty of effort, short on quality. Disappointing to concede the equaliser, but County scarcely deserved more.
