Lenell John-Lewis pounced with a late winner to get York's National League campaign back on track and hand Southend a third successive loss at Roots Hall.

John-Lewis followed up an initial effort from Callum Howe to poke home in the 89th minute and snatch the visitors a first win in three against the run of play.

York started well with Dipo Akimyemi denied an early chance and Ben Davies hitting the post after errors in the home defence.

But Southend pressed after the break with York keeper Gus Sykes-Kenworthy pulling off a great stop to deny Adam Crowther, before Crowther missed another good chance in the closing stages.

    Excellent win by York. However, their next game - against Dorking on Tuesday at home - is now huge. Win that, and they will go six points clear of Dorking and the relegation places and hit the psychologically important 40 points.
    Another four wins or so after that and safety should be secure.

    C'mon York...

    Their fans sang their hearts out recently for 90 minutes whilst losing 3-0 away at Chesterfield.
    Credit to them for that.
    Unfortunately after, they made comments like "best fans in the National League".
    Maybe they will soon claiming to be the "best fans in the National League South".

      Well maybe they are the best fans in the National League, don’t see a problem with saying that? Wonder if Chesterfield fans would be so good if they actually got punished for breaking the rules. Did far worse than Southend a few years back and still allowed to go up, horrible club.
