Louie Sibley's double took his goal tally for the season to seven

Dwight Gayle scored his first Derby County goal and Louie Sibley bagged a brace in a comfortable home win over struggling Port Vale.

It keeps Derby second in League One and leaves Vale without a win this year and deep in relegation trouble.

Derby made a lively start and went ahead in the fourth minute through Sibley whose shot took a big deflection to beat Connor Ripley.

The Vale keeper denied Derby a second in the 11th minute with a double save from Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Max Bird before Tom Barkhuizen fired over from eight yards for the hosts.

Vale appeared to have weathered the storm but they conceded again in the 44th minute when Gayle planted a precision header from 12 yards past Ripley.

Ben Garrity headed a Vale corner wide at the start of the second half but Derby sealed victory in the 58th minute when Joe Ward crossed to the back post and Sibley finished emphatically.

Derby could have added further goals while third-bottom Vale failed to register a shot on target, to leave new boss Darren Moore with just one point from his first five games in charge.

As a Pompey fan, I feel for the rams fans who had booked digs and transport to Pompey for the Easter Monday game to see it’s now moved to Tuesday night for sky tv.
No doubt you’ll still travel in numbers

The DCFC website states "Gayle got himself in between the Vale defence to plant a firm header low into the bottom corner for his first goal in a black and white shirt.". I'm not sure it's his first goal in black and white, but it's certainly his first in this black and white! Keep it up! COYR

Vital three points today given the other results in the top six. I get Vale are up against it but we’ve got form for slipping up against such teams so well done to all for today’s result.
I just hope Sibley doesn’t follow Knight and Bird to Bristol but what can you do ? 🤷‍♂️

Sorry vale fans, we told you about Moore. Absolutely shocking 'manager', I don't even like calling him that. Look at towns results since he left, the guyer is an absolute joke of a manager, and couldn't inspire anyone, tactically inept. Hope you stay up, good club, but terrible decision.

The right result for Derby after the two previous losses. However, they will still need to beat Bolton and hope Barnsley slip up to avoid the dreaded play offs.
