League Two leaders Mansfield Town extended their lead at the top of the table after a hard-fought win against Newport County at Rodney Parade.

Both teams struggled to carve out any real chances in the first half with both keepers making routine saves.

The deadlock was broken when George Maris got on the end of a brilliant low cross from Bailey Cargill.

Maris had further chances to double Mansfield's lead, but the Stags held onto their one-goal lead for victory.

A late goal conceded by Crewe means Mansfield's lead at the top of League Two extends to three points, while defeat leaves Newport five points off the play-off places.

Newport County manager Graham Coughlan told BBC Sport Wales: "I thought it was two really good teams going head to head, both cancelled each other out.

"When it comes to big games like that you have to have people in charge who understand the game and know the game and unfortunately the game hinged on a refereeing decision.

"It's sad to come away from a game where again we are talking about decision making."

    Mansfield 16 shots, 6 on target, Newport 6 shots, 0 on target. Pym not a proper save to make. Not sure what game Coughlan was watching to be spouting such drivel. Glad we got shot of him and got Clough in.
    Nice to have a little bit of daylight to Stockport, Crewe and Wrexham. Onto MK on Tuesday, let's hope we can do it again.

    A tough win for Stags today where they had to grind out a win despite missing a host of easy chances. To get 3 points when you haven’t played too well is the stuff of champions. It’s not done my any means and it might take 90 points to win the league; a recent high.

    Coughing refusing to shake hands again highlights what a plum he is and how we are so lucky to be rid of him.

    Home support wasn't what it normally is tho

    Wish Newport well a close game however the last time stags went up as champions Newport came up with us

    Fair play, we were second best today. If we'd got that goal deep in stopage time, I would have been delighted. Better team won and Mansfield deserve to up. Hopefully we can join you next season. UTC

    Better team won today, we dont play enough the full backs for county today didnt have any options when on the ball.

    The players work so hard for the team and the club but on occasion the manager geta his tactics wrong.

    When you continue to give the ball back by going long against teams like Notts county, MK dons and Mansfield your going to get punished

    GC got to take responsibility some times

      GC is a limited manager, it wouldn't surprise me if he is gone at the end of the season.

      Not because he hasn't done a good job he has to be fair in keeping Newport up. but because if Newport want to kick on and work there way up the league i think his style of play is limited - not a manager who is going to get you promoted even with better players.

    As a Stockport supporter I have to say it's yours to lose now, Newport is a tough place to win so well done. PS unlike some of our fans I've still got every confidence that we'll get our act back together and get automatic promotion and if we are to finish runners up I'd sooner do it to an English club.
