Paddy Madden scored an injury-time winner against Newport County to revive Stockport County's promotion hopes.

Newport were on course for a deserved point after Nick Townsend had denied Madden from the penalty spot.

More fine saves looked destined to keep Stockport out until Madden struck in the 93rd minute after a set-piece.

Stockport had previously gone almost a month without scoring, but the win means they remain second in League Two, three points adrift of Mansfield Town.

Newport drop to 13th after back-to-back defeats.

Newport County boss Graham Coughlan:

"I thought our lads gave everything. Stockport were the better team, but we expected that. The pressure was relentless, but our lads stood tall.

"We didn't have a particularly good game with the ball. Defensively we were organised, structured and I thought we were very good defensively.

"I thought Nick Townsend was outstanding. In fairness, on the whole, Stockport probably deserved to win the game, let's have that right.

"But, under the circumstances, I thought we deserved to come away with a clean sheet given the defensive structure and commitment that the lads showed."

    Newport always give everything and did today but lets be honest we had nothing going forward.

    What was the plan today turn them and go long. We didnt deserve anything today because we didnt play ant football

    We defended well and Townsend was superb but for me we didnt have a go.

    I feel sorry for the forwards today as they are feeding off scraps.

    There is no doubt whatsoever Stockport deserved the win, but much credit to Newport for digging in until close to time. The Exiles have been struck by an injury jink again with several regulars being ruled out for the rest of the season. Home v Morecambe on Tuesday

    Newport County keeper was an absolute hero - what a game! Although a huge thank you also to his time wasting skills which contributed to our 6 minutes added time. Get in County!! We scraped through but we got the points.

    County dominate the game with 73% possession, create 27% shots, miss a penalty yet pathetic BBC Wales covering the match report for the BBC UK Football website have a lengthy post match interview with the Newport manager but nothing from Dave Challinor.
    BBC Wales anti English bias and reporting is absolutely pathetic

    After Paddy's Pen Miss I didn't think it was guna happen that Townsend for Newport was excellent and I went absolute mental when the goal went in think 6 more wins and we're up and hopefully we get handed the title at Wrexham lol how nice would that be 😂😂😂😂 SCFC

    No question that Stockport of course deserved to win and good luck to them. Ref was abysmal though - no idea about the game. Npt County did not threaten but they were playing 11.5 at times. Pulling, pushing and blocking of Npt forwards was so cynical it became a joke. But as I say deservec Stockport win regardless of this

    Absolute shocker of a performance from Stockport, but a win nevertheless. Keep pulling those out and I'm ok. Where did that team go who whacked 5 past Wrexham? Ref, by the way was League 2 standard, awful.
