Manchester United are set to appoint Matt Johnson as interim head of women's football for six months from the end of the season.

He currently works for the club's Foundation as well as overseeing the girls' regional and emerging talent centres (RTCs).

Johnson will take over from Polly Bancroft, who leaves her role at United to join Grimsby Town as chief executive in May.

He will step into the role as interim while majority owners INEOS continue to assess their long-term ambitions for the club.

Johnson is expected to start in the role in May and brings with him more than 26 years of experience in the women's game.

Speaking about Johnson's prospective appointment, Manchester United boss Marc Skinner said: "I've always had the utmost respect for Matt.

"He is an organiser and a super calm figure. He thinks deeply and has lots and lots of qualities that will lend perfectly to the role. He'll be a real good blend of personality and qualities."

Meanwhile, it is understood discussions are still taking place regarding the future of Skinner, whose contract runs out this summer.
