  1. Spirit hang on after late Invincibles fightback

London Spirit hung on to beat Oval Invincibles by three runs in a thrilling finale which lit up the second night of the men's Hundred.

Needing 48 from the final 15 balls and then 17 from the last five, Invincibles were almost lifted to a remarkable victory by Danny Briggs.

He hit two successive fours to reduce the target to nine from three balls, before Jordan Thompson saw Spirit over the line with some good slower balls and well-executed yorkers, leaving Briggs unbeaten on 29 from 11 balls.

    Here's what also happened:

    • England white-ball opener Jason Roy saw his summer woes continue as he was out first ball and Invincibles, who were chasing 172 to win, slipped to 12-4.
    • Jordan Cox (39 off 30 balls) and Australian Hilton Cartwright (42 off 23) put on 74 for the fifth wicket and Tom Curran smacked 27 off 15 to keep Invincibles in the hunt
    • Spirit made 171-6 in their innings, with Eoin Morgan top-scoring with 47 from 29 balls. There were signs of a return to form for the former England white-ball captain as he smashed three lusty blows back down the ground.
    • Invincibles' overseas stars were impressive with the ball as Pakistan's Mohammad Hasnain and West Indies' Sunil Narine both claimed two wickets. England's Curran struggled though, conceding 40 runs from his 20 balls.

    What's next?

Invincibles will have the chance to bounce back when they travel to Welsh Fire, who lost in the opening game of the tournament, on Sunday. London Spirit will host Manchester Originals at Lord's on Monday night.

  2. Post update

It's another derby match tomorrow as Manchester Originals host Northern Superchargers at Old Trafford - it should be a cracker and if it is anything like tonight's match then we're all in for a treat!

We'll be back for that one and you can listen live from 18:20 BST on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.

  3. 'As close to an international game as I've ever felt in a domestic game'

London Spirit captain Eoin Morgan: "My nerves are alright! I love playing games like that, you get to find out a lot about your players and the opposition, and how guys go under pressure. Right here in the big moments like that, you get to see who stands up.

"Last year we were on the other side of a lot of these tight defeats so it's nice to be on the right side. The guys played really well, getting a good score on the board and getting early wickets. But credit to the Invincibles, they got some momentum and played outstandingly well.

"Chris Wood's plan was to bowl wide, and not allow them to swing. We didn't quite get it right but the guys will gain confidence from tonight having got the win even though we didn't bowl our best.

"It did feel as close to an international game as I've ever felt in a domestic game, maybe other than India when you have that pressure as an overseas player. It's amazing. Young Jordan Thompson being exposed to that, it will do wonders for him and it's great for English cricket to have players getting used to playing in these pressure situations.

"I felt quite rusty with the bat to be honest! Sam Curran got me right in the gut! But it was nice to get some runs, and more importantly that we won."

  4. Post update

Oval Invincibles captain Sam Billings: "Credit has to go to our guys down the order, Danny Briggs played a brilliant knock. It just showed how a partnership and a bit of momentum can get you going even when you're up against it.

"We played terribly, let's be honest, for most of that. But those guys showed real character to take it that deep.

"I think it's just down to a bit of rustiness. It's hard to be 12-4 and your top order hasn't fired, it is hard to recover. To take it down to the last ball is a brilliant effort. Hopefully we can fire next game and that's our bad day out the way.

"The crowd was amazing. This place is as good a place as anywhere in the world to play cricket and the atmosphere was incredible."

This photographer has won today. Take a bow, John Walton of the Press Association.

  6. Post update

So near yet so far. Just look at that steep worm when the Invincibles hit the accelarator.

  7. Post update

Match Hero Nathan Ellis: "There's no better way to start than a close one for the first game! It got a bit hot under the collar there at the end but it's great to get under way with a win.

"My first experience of the Hundred, it was unreal, the atmosphere was great.

"It's moved very quickly for me over the last 18 months but I'm loving playing with some of the best players in the world."

  8. Post update

OK, breathe. The Hundred has truly started again in 2022. London Spirit looked to have the game won but a stunning fightback from Oval Invincibles saw them score 45 runs off the last 16 balls to give their city rivals a real scare!

Eoin Morgan's side just held on, though. What a game!

That was incredible. The crowd can’t quite believe it. They got the thriller no-one expected.

Some people have their heads in their hands. Brilliant entertainment. Not sure about the quality but I don’t think people care right now.

The tournament needed this game. It looked like another easy victory, another wipeout.

But it's had us all on the edge of our seats. It was delightful, I really enjoyed that.

It was a sensational effort from Danny Briggs. Tom Curran played his part earlier.

They almost, almost brought it home.

London Spirit have held their nerve. Well done, Jordan Thompson.

They were given a real scare. What a nail-biter!

  12. London Spirit win

    Invincibles 168-7

We nearly had a Super Over! The ball flicked Narine's pad and would have gone away for four leg byes without Rossington's diving stop behind the stumps.

Just a single in the end and London Spirit win a thriller!

  13. Invincibles 167-7

    Five runs needed

    It's a wide!

Four to tie now and that would mean a Super Over!

    They’re going to do this…

  16. Invincibles 166-7

    Six runs needed

    Just a single.

Oval Invincibles need six runs from the last ball. Sunil Narine is on strike and the crowd are going bananas!
