India reach 336-6 after intriguing first day of second Test v England

That was a good day for England. I think they have just edged it. I know 330 runs is quite a lot of runs and the pitch will change as the game goes on but it was a flat pitch and their bowling attack is very inexperienced.

On what Jack Leach said at his cap presentation: "He just had a little throwback to when I got into the team at Somerset and he just said how proud they all are of me and my family. I've spent a lot of time with Leachy and for him to present me with my cap was very, very special."

On his first wicket being Rohit Sharma: "That was my highlight! He is such a good player of spin and to get his wicket as my first is very, very awesome."

On Ben Stokes' captaincy: "In the huddle he just said to go out there and enjoy it and remember why you started playing the game and you've got nothing to lose. That gave me so much confidence going in. I've been around the guys for a while now and they are so supportive and welcoming and that gets the best out of you. It has been amazing."

On England's day: "It was a tough pitch to bowl on. It didn't offer too much. I thought the way the boys went about it was awesome and for us to pick up six wickets and to pick up that late wicket of KS Bharat was massive."

On tomorrow: "Hopefully we'll get an early breakthrough and you know how things can work in cricket, more breakthroughs can come quite quickly."

A really good day for England could quite easily be hidden by Jaiswal getting a big daddy 100.

But England have taken consistent wickets on a batter-friendly surface, so they will be a happy team in that dressing room.

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal: "I had in my mind that I had to play session by session and if they are bowling well that I play that spell and that was how I went about it.

"Initially the wicket was a little damp and there was spin and bounce and the ball was seaming a bit but I was thinking about getting through and then converting the loose ball at the moment.

"The pitch played differently throughout the day, as the ball got older and older there was spin and bounce.

"I would love to double it up and I'll be trying to just keep going and play till the end for my team. I will go and recover properly for tomorrow."

India's frustration from the first Test was that they made 400 in the first innings when they should've made 600.

So it's not ideal that they haven't seemed to learn from their mistakes.

Rohit Sharma tickled one straight to leg slip, Rajat Patidar defended one on to his stumps, while KS Bharat and Axar Patel sliced it straight to point. Shubman Gill got a good ball but he could've left it, while Shreyas Iyer was unlucky to nick one that kept very low through to Ben Foakes.

It was an important toss given the wicket will only get worse, but apart from Jaiswal's wonderful knock India did not really capitalise and may rue some sloppy soft dismissals.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was absolutely outstanding. The rest of the India team were 158-6 on a pretty good wicket. If you take him out of the side their fragile batting line-up is still there.

He's delivered when his side need it. It was an innings of maturity and skill beyond his 22 years.

I wonder if England could bowl a bit wider at him. It might leak some runs but it would add more risk.

But despite England's best efforts, it was a 22-year-old batting with remarkable maturity and composure that stood in their way.

Jaiswal's 179 was a lesson to the rest of the India line-up in playing with patience, but picking the right moments to be aggressive and simply waiting for the bad ball.

He's shouldered a lot of the responsibility already but he'll have to pick it up again tomorrow to try and steer India's lower order towards 400 and beyond.

A solid all-round performance from all of England's bowlers.

Shoaib Bashir, on debut, took 2-100 while Rehan Ahmed took 2-61, with James Anderson and Tom Hartley taking one each.

On a flat pitch having lost the toss, I was thinking that England were in for a heck of a long day. Again, Anderson continues to defy logic while the young spinners stood up to the occasion expertly.

And he safely defends the last.

That concludes a very, very good day for England.

But the standout was Yashasvi Jaiswal, who withstood it all and batted through the day to finish unbeaten on 179 from 257 balls. The 22-year-old shows them all how it's done.

Ravichandran Ashwin has got a tricky couple of overs to negotiate at the end of the day here. I bet he's not impressed that he's had to come out to bat today.

He shouldn't be, really. India's poor discipline has cost them.

KS Bharat batted as though in a run chase. His strike-rate might be good but a poor dismissal means no impact on the game.
