For him to win that final, he will have known he needed Luke to drop his level - and Luke did.
And that's when Dimitri took his chances. He almost cost himself but he got over the line in the end.
Credit to him - when you've missed match darts, it's a huge victory. He dug in deep and played his own game. It's not to everyone's tastes but it's got him the title.

"First of all, everybody, he [Humphries] showed again why he is the world champion.
"There was a moment when I was 10-7 or 10-8 up and I was like 'I'm one leg away' and I just lost it.
"I lost my guts but all of a sudden it turned around. I've got to say my grandad passed away two years ago and this is my first major win since - this is for him.
"You win some, you lose some, you have to dig deep and try, it's very simple, this year I've always been a bit dodgy about sports psychologists - they were probably my last choice if I wanted to get better and stronger but I said 'give it a go'.
"And right here, right now I really think I made the right choice. Luke also told me it works and right here I've got gold - grandad I've got gold!"

"I've had a long five days on the road and I am absolutely shattered.
"I was very lucky to get two darts [to win it] - the crowd were amazing towards me and I'm not used to that! So thank you.
"I'm obviously gutted to miss those two darts but Dimitri played a good game, a couple of big shots at the start really hurt, and I did my best.
"I gave everything, I really didn't play well. It might not have been the best game in the world but it gave great entertainment and I'm really proud of the way I played."
Asked about ticking off the UK Open, one of the few gaps in his major trophy resume, Humphries laughs: "Yep, next year!"
