Peter: Mexico's group stage started with goalkeeping heroics saving them from the spot. They end their group stage with goalkeeping heroics (in the other game) condemning them from the spot. Cruel symmetry

  5. First World Cup goals

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez both scored their first goals at the World Cup, with only Brazil (83) and Germany (77) now having more different scorers in the competition than Argentina (62, excluding own goals).

  6. 'Amazing moment for me'

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

    BBC Red Button

Alexis Mac Allister speaking to BBC Red Button: "Very happy to score my first goal for Argentina. today was an amazing moment for me and for my family. It's a big moment for me and I will always remember it.

On next opponents Australia: "We think they are a good team. I played against them in the Olympic Games, we lost. So we know how difficult they are, of course, not the same team and we are not the same team but they are a very good team and it will be a tough side."

Stephen: A very poor and lucky Polish team. To think, before that late Saudi Arabia goal they were still advancing - but on fewer yellow cards received. Chaos indeed!

  8. Utter domination

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Argentina completed 800 passes and had a pass completion rate of 92% in this match – both of which were their highest in a World Cup game on record (since 1966).

  9. The dream is still alive...

  10. Post update

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Despite their defeat in this game, Poland qualified from the group stage of a World Cup tournament for the first time since 1986.

They had failed to do so in each of their previous three appearances at the tournament prior to this year (2002, 2006 and 2018).

Steve: Two cracking goals from Mexico and very unlucky. Great game.

  12. Post update

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

    Andy Cryer

    BBC Sport in Qatar

    This is incredible.

The Argentina fans are not going anywhere. The noise coming from both ends of the ground as the blue and white shirts jump up and down to some catchy tune.

It feels like they believe this could be their year!

  13. 'Can't see Poland going any further'

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

    Rio Ferdinand

Former England defender on BBC One

The end was crazy, we didn't know whether we were coming or going. Poland were poor today, I don't see them going past this stage. They did well to get where they are but Lewandowski was starved of any good service.

Sho: Too little too late from Mexico. Where was this in the first two games?

  15. Post update

    FT: Saudi Arabia 1-2 Mexico

    Matt Upson

Former England defender on BBC Two

Chance after chance, we were off our seat thinking Mexico were going to do it.

  16. 'Best performance from Argentina so far'

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

    Pablo Zabaleta

Ex- Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

That was Argentina's best performance so far in the tournament. This is more what we expected from Argentina before the World Cup. Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez have been involved in goals. It seems that Scaloni has found the best starting eleven so hopefully we can see that again. We've got a good draw against Australia which is good.

Alex: Poland are like that student who didn’t contribute in the group project but still gets a top grade.

  18. Post update

    FT: Poland 0-2 Argentina

    Andy Cryer

    BBC Sport in Qatar

There are tears of happiness from the Poland fans.

Or they might just be emotionally drained after that.

They were never at a point of exiting the competition at any stage - but it really felt they were.
