Riders have been warned to make sure their bike is protected following a recent spate of thefts of e-bikes and motorbikes. Avon and Somerset Police said that tackling the thefts in Keynsham is “a key priority” as reports of bike thefts have risen.

A new priority for the Neighbourhood Police Team was agreed last month after an increase in stolen motorbikes and mopeds across the Keynsham area. Police have recommended riders get the “biggest lock that you can afford and lock it to a permanent structure in an attempt to stop it being removed easily”.

Police have now suggested tips on securing your bike, whether it is an e-bike, bicycle or motorbike, or moped. They have recommended riders use disc locks with mini alarms fitted whenever leaving their transportation.

Riders have also been told to Install a tracker and monitoring app, chain the bike to an immovable object with a good chain and padlock and, where possible, park it in a busy and overlooked area with CCTV and street lighting. Bike owners should also record the VIN or frame number and “etch or stamp it on other parts of the bike”.

Additionally, if at home, police have suggested using a ground anchor to keep the bike or moped secure and to install motion-sensing security lighting and CCTV.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Rob Turner said: "Tackling the thefts of motorbikes and e-bikes is a key priority for us. We understand the impact these crimes can have and we're working hard to identify offenders.

"Last week, our team recovered two stolen motorbikes and have since reunited them with their grateful owners. We encourage people to report suspicious behaviour.

“If you see someone acting suspiciously around motorbikes, bicycles or e-bikes, or riding them in a way which poses a danger to others and themselves, please call 999 immediately. We’ll attend whenever we can, and such calls have already led to arrests and the recovery of stolen motorbikes.

"We also want to hear any information about those responsible for such theft, any footage of offenders riding anti-socially, or know where stolen motorcycles, bicycles or parts are being stored or sold." If you can help, call 101 or report through the police website.
