2 years ago today, the Policing Bill passed. But the UK government crackdown on our rights did not stop there. For years UK government has firmly chiselled away our right to peaceful protest - only to reveal a slide towards authoritarianism. Government ministers have been scapegoating Muslim communities and stoking up Islamophobia to continue the crackdown on our collective freedom of expression. But we know that this has been years in the making. And we will not stand by as it continues. Join us to sign the petition to scrap anti-protest laws today ✊🏽: http://amn.st/6043bQGx5 The Road to Repression ⬇️ 1️⃣ Black Lives Matter, Climate protests, Sarah Everard vigil (2018-2021) From protests for racial justice, police accountability and climate justice, hundreds of thousands of people across the UK took to the streets for human rights. As demands for climate justice grow, criminalisation of protest tactics and stigmatisation of protesters ramp up. 2️⃣ Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act (April 2022) This deeply-authoritarian Act placed major new restrictions on our right to protest, while persecuting traveller communities and entrenching racism. 3️⃣ Public Order Act (May 2023) With public confidence in policing at its lowest, police were given even more powers to restrict people’s fundamental right to peaceful protest. 4️⃣ Coronation Weekend Policing (May 2023) The Metropolitan police made several spurious arrests, with heavy-handed anti-protest policing at its crudest, using new powers at their disposal to crackdown on freedom of expression. 5️⃣ Anti-Protest Rhetoric (November 2023) As hundreds of thousands marched for a permanent ceasefire by all parties in Gaza, politicians and government ministers ramped up their anti-protest rhetoric, with then-Home Secretary Suella Braverman calling for “hate marches” to be banned. 6️⃣ Islamophobia, Racist Silencing and Repression (February-March 2024) The government propose further anti-protest measures in the Criminal Justice Bill, while ramping up its racist Prevent programme and expanding the definition of extremism. This takes us all further down the road toward authoritarianism, but it is impacting Muslim communities hardest.

It’s been 200 days since October 7. There is still no ceasefire, and the UN Security Council continues to be ignored. The risk of genocide is real, and the International Court of Justice continues to be ignored. The blockade on Gaza has not been lifted and civilians continue to be used as bargaining chips. Meanwhile, not in the headlines, attacks in the occupied West Bank perpetrated by Israeli settlers and Israeli forces are increasing. The attacks have destroyed lives, homes, schools, olive trees, and land, displacing Palestinian communities and families. The spike in state-backed settler violence, just like the onslaught in Gaza, shows why we need to end the occupation and dismantle Israel’s racist system of the apartheid right now.

Freedom of expression is vital for a free and fair society - we all want to live without fear, knowing our right to speak up is protected. Hong Kongers want this too, wherever they live. But earlier this year, the Hong Kong government passed #Article23 to criminalise activism in the name of national security. This is why it matters ⬇️ 1️⃣ The purpose of Article 23 Article 23 takes repression to the next level. The purpose of this law is to stifle criticism of Chinese and Hong Kong authorities and policies. It is designed to intimidate peaceful activism and legitimate engagement with international organisations and political bodies. 2️⃣ Article 23 is extraterritorial Article 23 applies outside of Hong Kong - to all Hong Kongers, wherever they live. Article 23 leaves no one safe from being labelled a threat to Hong Kong’s national security. UK nationals, media and NGOs operating in Hong Kong are also affected by these sweeping powers. 1️⃣ Article 23 in the UK Article 23 is a gross violation of human rights. The UK is home to the largest exiled population of Hong Kongers. The UK government must make it clear that it will keep people safe from this brutal new law.

📣 Human rights should be for all of us. No exceptions. This week, Parliamentarians will cast their votes on the #RwandaBill. This Bill strips away fundamental human rights from people seeking safety. It’s immoral, dehumanising and callous. Cruelty is the point. Share this post and join us in urging the UK government to scrap this inhumane Bill.
