About us
Boston Children's Hospital is a 404-bed comprehensive center for pediatric health care. As one of the largest pediatric medical centers in the United States, Boston Children's offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth through 21 years of age. (Our services can begin interventions at 15 weeks gestation and in some situations we also treat adults.) We have approximately 25,000 inpatient admissions each year and our 200+ specialized clinical programs schedule 557,000 visits annually. Last year, the hospital performed more than 26,500 surgical procedures and 214,000 radiological examinations. Our team of physicians and nurses has been recognized by a number of independent organizations for overall excellence, and we're proud to share some notable examples with you here.

Dr. Partha Ghosh cand his team in the Neuromuscular Center helped conduct clinical trials for Elevidys, the first-ever gene therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In June 2023, the FDA approved Elevidys and a few months later, Lucas became the first patient in Massachusetts to receive the new therapy outside of a clinical trial. 🙌 While the future remains full of unknowns, Lucas is taking advantage of his ability to run, jump, and play. ⬇️

One in six children have a neurodevelopmental disability such as autism, intellectual disability, or ADHD. Because of stigma and “ableism,” their medical care is often inadequate — and their health outcomes often worse. Alarmed by this state of affairs, Carol Weitzman, co-director of the Autism Spectrum Center at Boston Children’s, led the development of a first-of-its-kind consensus statement calling for system-wide change. 👇

Well-earned recognition! 👏 Our own Stuart Orkin, MD, just named to the #TIME100 list, conducted pioneering research on sickle cell disease that has now led to a gene therapy, Casgevy. And he’s not done: His lab is working on a drug for sickle cell that could be taken in pill form. Read more: http://ms.spr.ly/6047YBw8l

Inflammatory bowel disease is often hard to control with current treatments. To get new leads, a team at Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital eavesdropped on the colon — before, during, and after a colitis episode. Using MERFISH, they imaged slices of colon, tracking the expression of 940 genes in 1.3 million cells. A true tour-de-force by Jeffrey Moffitt, Paolo Cadinu, Roni Nowarski, Kisha Sivanathan, and colleagues! 👏👇

When we’re vaccinated or exposed to pathogens, our B cells rev up to make antibodies that are increasingly specific and protective. The Farzan and Winau labs at Boston Children’s describe ways to enhance this process — opening a door to better vaccines and antibody-based biologics. On the flip side, the Carroll lab reveals how B cells sometimes create antibodies that attack our own tissues — opening a door to new treatments for autoimmune disease. More in our blog 👇
