✈ Decarbonizing the #aviation sector will require large investments to deploy sustainable aviation fuels (#SAF). Financial mechanisms can help direct investments and narrow the cost gap between traditional fossil jet fuel and SAF. In Europe, a new scheme aims to shrink this cost gap using funds from the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), the continent’s carbon market.    The new re-investment mechanism sets aside 20 million allowances for aircraft operators to offset the higher cost of SAF production and rewards fuels according to their climate benefits.  🌍🌿 E-kerosene will receive 95% of the cost differential after taxes on fossil fuel while other SAF pathways receive between 50 and 70% of the cost differential.     We estimated how this mechanism can close the cost gap between fossil jet and e-kerosene.  Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dpGsD977    #efuels #SAF #emissions #climate #aviation #fuels 

🤔❓What would be the consumer demand response to carbon pricing?    A new ICCT study models the potential effects of introducing carbon pricing on Canada interprovincial flights and assesses using a frequent flyer levy (#FFL) to achieve the same change in demand as carbon pricing.     The study estimates the number of foregone tickets and the level of emissions reduction in response to carbon pricing under different decarbonization scenarios. With a $170/tonne price in 2030, the demand impact would be modest at 4% reduction from baseline. In-sector recycling of carbon pricing proceeds could reduce demand impacts associated with #SAF deployment.    A frequent flyer levy could help shift the impact of carbon pricing towards those who fly more often. The eventual rise of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) will result in fewer emissions to be priced. China’s Hainan province is prioritizing the transition to new energy cars, buses, and light-duty trucks, while also acknowledging the need to accelerate the deployment of new energy heavy-duty trucks. We investigated two specific use cases of zero-emission trucks in Hainan and collected first-hand empirical data on real-world operations: tractor-trailers for moving cargo containers at the Port of Yangpu and concrete mixer trucks at two cement plants. 🔎 Our newest blog explores a key part of the debate over eligibility guidelines for the Inflation Reduction Act’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) tax credit: Should the GREET model, specifically soil organic carbon (SOC) modeling using a sub-model called the Feedstock Carbon Intensity Calculator (FD-CIC), be used to determine whether agricultural practices like adding manure to soil qualify for emissions offsets in the production of SAFs?     The GREET model can be tricky for crediting manure soil amendments, and the way GREET calculates credits might distort the true greenhouse gas emissions impact of fuel production or may even result in an increase in net greenhouse gas emissions.    Instead of approving the use of GREET FD-CIC, the U.S. SAF interagency task group could work to enhance sampling and measurement techniques to assess SOC gains and provide other technical assistance to farmers. #SustainableAviation #FuelPolicy #ClimateAction Read more here ⤵

Today, the European Parliament approved a mandatory target to reduce 90% of CO2 emissions from new trucks by 2040. 🚚 #CO2standards #trucks   This landmark legislation raises the ambition of previous EU law and sets the stage for one of the world's most robust regulatory climate frameworks for heavy-duty vehicles. Trucks and buses are just 2% of the total vehicles on the road in the EU but account for a quarter of all transport-related emissions.    The legislation mandates that:   🔴 On average, new truck sales need to emit 43% less CO2 in 2030 than in 2019, 64% less in 2035, and 90% less in 2040.   🚌 City buses will witness an even swifter transition, with 90% of sales required to be zero-emission by 2030 and a complete phase-out of fossil-fueled bus sales by 2035.   🚛 More types of vehicles are now regulated.
