An anti-monarchy billboard designed by Alex Salmond’s Alba Party has been rejected by one of the UK’s biggest media companies.

An email sent to the party by Global said it would not display the poster because it was likely to cause offence.

The artwork shows the King’s face with a prohibition sign on it alongside the words: “It’s time for an independent republic of Scotland.”

Alba is led by the former first minister Alex Salmond, who has switched from being a monarchist to espousing republicanism.

The party tried to agree another design with Global that featured the crown, instead of the King, crossed out. The media company knocked that back too “due to being a direct reference to the royals”.
