BBC pays out £127m in golden goodbyes amid staff exodus

The BBC has paid almost £127 million in severance payouts over the past two years as the corporation experiences a so-called staff exodus, with star presenters taking their talents to rivals.

The corporation spent a total of £126.9 million on “golden goodbyes” in the past two years for 1,851 employees, of whom almost 430 left with between £100,000 and £150,000.

According to the BBC’s annual report £55.47 million was paid out to 745 staff in 2021-22, while £74.51 million was paid out to 1,106 staff in the previous year. The figures represent the highest level of severance payouts since the broadcaster began reporting the figures in 2013.
