There are so many excellent schools across the north of England, from world-renowned independents to selective grammars and innovative comprehensives, such as the Parent Power new entry St Mary’s College in Hull. The challenge is to stand out from the crowd.

St Mary’s, a mixed Roman Catholic secondary and sixth form, certainly does that. “Winning the North Comprehensive School of the Year award means that the country can see our school as we see it, a beacon of academic and spiritual excellence,” says Maria Stead, head of school. “We genuinely feel we are a light in the city of Hull, a sanctuary for all of our pupils in a town that is not always recognised as a place of educational hope.”
