A children’s Easter egg hunt in a Victorian cemetery has been cancelled after a backlash from families of people buried there.

The Friends of Wrexham Cemetery in north Wales have been forced to scrap the event at the last minute after failing to reassure locals that the graves would not be trampled on.

More than 30 children were due to attend the event in the graveyard on Sunday to hunt for Easter eggs hidden among gravestones and monuments dating back more than 100 years.

Organisers said it would be a “wonderful idea to get young people interested in local genealogy” and that the area of the graveyard set aside for the hunt was “occupied by the dead from a century ago”.
