Chris Packham and an Olympic gold medallist are among 1,500 campaigners calling for the lady chief justice to suspend a judge who allegedly threatened jurors with criminal charges.

In an unprecedented move, environmental campaigners delivered the letter, whose signatories include the BBC nature presenter and Etienne Stott, a canoeist, last week to Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill at the Royal Courts of Justice.

It follows a formal complaint made by some of the signatories to the judicial authorities over the alleged behaviour of Silas Reid, a judge at Inner London crown court.

The move highlights growing concern over the behaviour of judges in several recent incidents. Earlier this month it emerged that complaints had been logged with the Judicial Conduct Investigations Office about Tan Ikram,
