Born in Arbroath, Doug Johnstone has written 16 novels and is also the drummer in the Fun Lovin’ Crime Writers, a band of authors including Val McDermid.

What’s your earliest memory?
I met Santa Claus at nursery school. Like, the real Santa Claus. He gave me an Etch A Sketch and I absolutely adored that thing for years.

What has been your most memorable Scottish gig?
December 1991, and an up-and-coming American band played an acoustic set at my local pub in between shows on their UK tour. That band was Nirvana and their impromptu show at the Southern bar in Edinburgh is now infamous. I had a wee chat with Kurt Cobain afterwards and Dave Grohl bought me a pint.
