Estate agents won’t be respected by the public until they are regulated

The government must listen to the House of Lords and set up an independent regulator for property agents. This would reform the industry and prevent unscrupulous behaviour

There is a perception that the House of Lords is made up of a bunch of old duffers, fast asleep wrapped in ermine robes. But with their latest intervention they have shown themselves to be in tune with what the public needs.

Baroness Taylor of Bolton, the chair of the Lords industry and regulators committee, wrote to the housing secretary, Michael Gove, to accuse the government of “sitting on its hands for four years” when it should have been setting up an independent regulator for property agents.

A report by Lord Best recommended as much in 2019, but it has been nearly five years since then and the government has still not responded to it.
