The ski holidays of hundreds of thousands of Britons are at risk from plans by French unions to shut down lifts over the February half-term.

In an escalation of a dispute over pension reforms, the two main unions covering lift and seasonal workers announced “unlimited” strike action from January 31. They are targeting walkouts over the half-term period, the busiest period for Alpine resorts, and have the capability to close scores of ski stations.

“We have decided to call for a strike during the February holidays because demands are listened to more during this period,” said Eric Becker, head of the lift operators’ branch of the Force Ouvrière union. Half-term in the UK is split over two weeks, from February 11-25. It runs for four
